Following some info from an older thread, I'm wondering if this apparently uncirculated 1971-S is a special one. The photos will open huge in a new window, but the clarity is still lacking... can't remember where my digital microscope is packed. The points I'm considering as meaningful do show clearly under a 40 lighted loop, and they are "scratches" in Lincoln's beard, bow tie seems different, on the reverse the steps of the memorial are very crisp and defined the whole way across (deep lines at bottom of steps), and the designer's initials are "melty". I did just find another '71-S in a 1959-1992 Lincoln coin folder, and comparing the two under the 40x loop the differences do seem to be there. Expert opinions, please. And thank you!
Unless you're blind in one eye and don't happen to see too well out of the other eye, that's a rhetorical question.
Why so? It's been very useful over the years, especially for looking at what scientists call "really tiny things".
Two reasons: they are for the most part horrible images with too many compression artifacts and, you really need to not get caught up in “really tiny things”.
Backstory - this came out of a hoarder house, not a lot of coins but we were told to expect a lot... seems the daughter got to them first. There were a few scattered in drawers and boxes here and there, and this one was in this cryptically-labeled cardboard holder.
Interesting that a forum that spouts lengthy rules about politeness and respect would harbor someone who hurls raw snark at a newbie on one of his first posts. Since the rules prohibit me from telling you what I really think of your rude, snarky comments, I'll stick to the issue and just say that I suspected my coin might be an ODV-028, paired with the RDV-008. Thanks for playing along.
Thanks, really. Evidently he doesn't know what "rhetorical" means. Your question I was saying was rhetorical because it was obvious his coin wasn't anything like the one you posted.
Okay, let's try this again. Nooooo.... I didn't think my coin was some unbelievably never-seen double-strike freak show. I think it might be an ODV-028, paired with the RDV-008, and I think that could make it worth as much as face value, maybe more. But I'll never know unless I can get a post up and receive some genuine responses before someone jumps in to mock me. Thanks again.
As to the rules, there is a small blue "Report" in the bottom line of each post. If a person finds fault with it, they may click on it and a moderator will check it. If in the moderators opinion, it violates, they will respond appropriately. We do not view " retaliation" as a positive action by a member. You can talk badly about a coin, but not similarly about a person. We try to balance a mainly "adult" population with a much younger age population. As for the coin, it is close to be UNC, but probably best would be AU-58, the circulation/ rub marks near the bowtie makes it difficult to confirm a ODV-28, and I suspect it is not based on the photo. It may have to validated with a good loupe or detailed higher resolution photo. Jim
