I think coins up until about 1500 or so, representing the end of the middle ages are fine. After that they become "world coins", But I am happy to see whatever anyone posts here.

@TypeCoin971793 (and others): do any of the major TPGs every attribute “Randall Hoard” cents?

I don’t think so because there is no way to be 100% sure of the provenance. I am 99.9999% sure that my coin is from the Randall Hoard, but there is no way to 100% prove it.

I am taking the poll results as license to post hammered coins. I am suprised there wasn't a single vote for the first option (at least as of this writing).

I voted C, but with one exception. Modify the grouping to include cast coins and other forms of pre-money like aes rude (crude bronze), aes signatum (cast bronze bars), hacksilver, and similar items.

I think proto-coinage (if that is the correct term) fits in the ancient forum and that Aes Grave As in your top picture is just stunning! To me nothing says old Republican Rome like one of those!

Naturally, those cast coins were made before AD 500, so they would be included in any case.

How could I miss this thread? My personal opinion is anything minted during the reign of @GDJMSP is perfectly FINE. ;)

In any case I hope nobody will be strict and start refusing coins. On CoinTalk there is only a World Coin forum, no earlier stuff.

The term "ancient" usually means any coinage struck from first known coins (620BC) to the Fall of Rome 410AD. The Dark Ages began in 410AD/ ended around 1400AD with the advent of the Renaissance. That would be the technical defination. As far as this forum goes, I love seeing all coins from the earliest EL coinage to present day. But, I agree with those who said that all coinage is OK, as long as its "hammered". The "milled" coins can be discussed/ shown off on World/ or USA forums.:cat:
Here is a modern hammered coin.....
AV 1/8 Mohur dated AH1318= 1900AD Haiderabad Mint
Mir Mahbub Ali Khan II 1868-1911
    Hyderabad
This family owned the Mughal Empire AV 1000 Mohur struck by Jahangir. This coin weighed 35 POUNDS. It was last in auction in 1985, when it had a reserve of $8 million US (today=30million dollars) Putin could easily afford one;) 3737224l.jpg 3737224l.jpg 3737224l.jpg 3737224l.jpg
