I came across an odd 1928-s wheat penny that does not appear to be 95% copper is anyone aware of the existence of any such coin? It appears to be similar to a steel penny but the metal is a bit darker looking in color like iron or something and I do not want to attempt to clean it up. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance
Does it say Penny or CENT on the back? Let me think... 2018 - 1928 = 90 years... hmmm Environmental Damage!
The 1928-S cent is reasonably rare at 17,266,000 mintage. It is worth about a buck in G-4 condition. I've not heard of a steel 1928-S cent, but it would certainly be valuable if it is real. Have you weighed the coin? It should weigh about 3.1 grams if it 95% copper. It could be a little less weight if in poor condition.
