It's really hard to tell from those photos. My first impulse is no, I wouldn't crack it out. They're pretty picky about MS63 Indians, and expect a lot of detail in the headdress feathers, eagle's shoulder, and eagle's breast. Nice coin for sure. I love 'em.
From those pictures it is impossible for me to even guess if it will upgrade. However, I'm generally scared of the 62 grade, particularly on sight-unseen (or sight-seen-with-small-confusing-photo) transactions. I wonder what's wrong with the coin -- is it a nice AU example or an impared mint state example...I hope neither! From the pics, the coin looks to be deviod of luster, which is precisely what I'd be interested in if I were buying a mint state indian half eagle. But the photos are so odd it is hard to be sure -- it almost looks like a scan which are notorious for making luster difficult to ascertain. This is exactly the type of coin that I would want to see in-hand before buying. Regardless, it is a very neat coin and one of my favorite designs, and I hope you like it once it arrives. Respectfully submitted...MIke
i understand your concerns Mike thats where the seller rep comes into play along with the winds of the market and we also have the pcgs slab for protection
spock, I copied and pasted the pics to my PC, brightened them and blew them up and can't see why the coin only graded as a MS-62! So, yes I believe that it could get an upgrade but don't take my word for it as based on the pics, it is hard to almost impossible to determine why PCGS only graded it MS-62. Could it be because the Lettering on the rims is somewhat cut-off? it doesn't seem logical as the $2.50 Indians are notorious for this! With the blowups, I am pretty sure that MS-64 or better details exist on the coin, so there is apparently something you, I and everyone else is not seeing! Is there anyway that you can get some real closeups of the coin, crop everyting out except for the coin and post them here? If so, then maybe we can make a better assessment! Frank
Yep, it sure looks like a scan. Say Spock... post up good macro pics when you have it in hand. In the meantime, check out census and price for MS64s. There are few and they are spendy. Don't get your hopes up on that. But hey... ya never know. 1926s are better quality than most dates in the Indian $2.50 series. I'm interested in how this one plays out ! Good luck !
1926 quarter eagle last week I got a cold call from a NY outfit called PREMIER COIN GALLERIES. My experience with cold calls is that you get your best deal the first time you buy. They sold me a 1927 quarter eagle graded ms 63 for 575. It was graded by NTC NUMISTRUST corp. I just received the coin and it is encapsulated. Anybody ever heard of NTC?
xobrat, Welcome to Coin Talk! I hope that you will like the forums and hang around! Yes, NTC is one of the smaller, lesser known and lesser trusted Grading Companies (TPG)! They are sometimes known for over-grading by one or two grades but sometimes they are right on. Hopefully, they did not over-grade your 1927 Quarter Eagle or at the least by no more than one grade (MS-62), otherwise you overpaid for the coin. Sometimes, if you buy the coin and not the holder but stress to the Seller the fact that NTC is not highly trusted, you might be able to haggle for a much lower price and come out on the big end of the stick per say! If you can, post some good, cropped pictures with a couple of close-ups and we might be able to determine how well you did on the purchase! Frank
Welcome to the forum, xobrat ! Great place to learn. Yes. I don't like 'em. In addition to overgrading, many of their coins are harshly cleaned or whizzed. It's bad enough that they overgrade, but the altered surfaces are more serious issues. The value of the coin drops faster. Simply put - Treat NTC coins as raw, uncertified coins. If you're comfortable in your grading skills, then give it a try.
So, let me get this straight. Some guy calls you up, out of the blue, and says, "hey there Mr. investor, I'm selling gold over the phone sight unseen, wanna buy some?"
thats pretty much it now where can i find some generous patrons like those oh wait there will be 30000 of thos ebuying the plat sets on thursday
I think they put random numbers on the grade of these coins. I have no clue and I own a few of these. Ruben
