Attempting to attribute some of my lower end coins (this category makes up a mere 99.9% of my collection btw..lol)..
This one came in a 2X2 stating Siscia Mint... but I just don't see it.
What do you think? Looking at Wildwinds and the none of the Mint Marks seem to match this one ... but what do I know? Not much... still learning.

Obv: IMP LICINIVS PF AVG Laureled bust right
Rev: IOVI CONSERVATORI Jupiter standing left, holding thunderbolt (?)
Could not see an example with that wreath mark on the reverse either....

Any help is appreciated! Sorry about the pics.. still refining things..

It's RQ - Rome mint. However, did you know that only the Rome mint used the T-within-wreath field mark on this series? So even if the mint mark was illegible, we would still know it was struck in Rome.

Well I have my answer - thank you. Looking back at what threw me off was that a lot of the Mint Marks for Rome on Licinius coins on Wildwinds look like "RS".. but now I see a few that are "RQ".. kind of once you're told you see it sort of thing.
Didn't see any examples with the wreath there so not sure where to find that information outside of asking... but now I know. Thx!

Clavdius, do you have Guido Bruck's Late Roman Bronze Coinage, An attribution guide for poorly preserved coins? If you're a masochist like me and like to identify worn LRB's, this book is a must-have. Here's the Amazon link, used copies starting at 19 bucks.

I was going through a bag of pretty rough LRB's myself today and came across this little mystery...

    julian spes.jpg

I could clearly see that this was a SPES type - I've seen them issued by Constantius II, but I could not make out the obverse legend other than to say it was not Constantius II. Also, the mint mark on the reverse is off-flan.

I looked up the Spes types in Bruck. Here's how it's laid out...

    spes page.jpg

This tells me the type was also issued by Julian II, and the reverse field mark on my coin corresponds to Cyzicus mint, and once I know that, I also get the complete obverse inscription as Cyzicus used only one. It's a book worth having, and it comes pretty cheap as far as numismatic texts go.

I AM ordering this book.. I am so glad that I posted this question. Great information that will really help me increase my enjoyment of LRBs. I can't thank you enough! If you lived nearby your next beer would be on me.
    Cheers!

I had ther pleasure of meeting @John Anthony in Baltimore a few weeks ago and can vouch for that. He has a better head of hair than I do, and I'm 37.

It was good to meet you Red! I wish we all had a coin club that we could go to that was reasonable driving distance for everyone. I love CT, but there's no substitute for real life sitting around and talking shop. Shows aren't a good place for collectors to socialize - we've all got our heads buried in the boxes and trays.
