I just found a 1976-S bicentennial silver proof in the local Coinstar machine. It's impaired but in good shape other than some fingerprints. Score!
Here are some pictures. It weighs 5.81g on my scales that are obviously not accurate (a regular cupronickel quarter weighs 5.71g on the same scales) and it appears to be silver from looking at the edge. It's the second or third silver quarter I've found in a Coinstar machine.
Awesome. There are 1976-S's that are not silver. The weight is very similar 5.67g clad 5.75g 40% Ag. In fact the 1976-S clad is only 4 million mintage and the 1976-S 40% silver is 11 million. But the silver is worth more.
I don't know if you can tell from the pictures, but does mine look silver? I don't see any copper in the edge.
I can't tell it could be silver. The coin star is sensitive and the weight difference is so similar, it may have been rejected for wrong metal. (Silver) There looks like a copper patch on the reverse at 7 o'clock. But that just appears to be some kind of discoloration, toning or other reason. If the edge is white, it's probably good. Either way the 1976-S is a good one.
I found a 1961 D Washington Quarter in the coin return slot of the Coinstar machine. Selling it on ebay.
I would save it, since silver is low now. When silver is higher in the future, you can sell it to a coin store or gold silver buy/sell store for a decent amount.
Not Coin Star but my 29 cents over the counter change from mailing a package today consisted of two low grade memorials; a Bermuda 1973 one cent and a Canada 1952 cent plus an ATB 2016-P North Dakota Theodore Roosevelt in nice circulated condition. No wear visible to the naked eye. Keep checking your change.
That is someone's birth year pocket piece lucky coin. Some people are compiling worst possible type coin sets. That one would be popular with those guys. They seem to have no trouble finding obsolete type coins but the moderns are few and far between. My own set only consists of the worst coin that I have found. I'm not buying any of them and am just down grading when I find one in worse condition. Great find.
Are you really needing the $ to hit Taco Bell? Coinstar finds are like urban treasure hunting. Keep your find. The satisfaction of the find and free silver are your compensation.
harley bissell I don't think it will grade. The date is readable, it's either 88 or 89 and if you look with a good loupe and know what the top half of the 8 and 9 looks like, the date can be determined. I don't think the coin is naturally worn and circulated. It may have been a dryer coin, or something else to accelerate the worn condition. It only weighs 5.3 which is why it was rejected.
As a grade school graduate f any rank you would know more than me. The lowest grade slabbed coin that I ever owned was a FR-2 1916-d dime that I traded off years ago.
Not a bad looking quarter. Member. Are you looking for a profit for this cooin. Better hope for a 20 bid. Worth melt only
