It was here on CoinTalk that I learned to value campgate coins. When I had decided to get myself a few, it was not so easy as I had thought to lay hands on one with fine quality (probably because you all are collecting the same). Later I found one of Valentinian III (on vcoins), and this week arrived a beauty from Frank Robinson's auction. And so there are six here on the table. The 2018 Robinson is bottom right in the pictures. Bottom left (with the dot in the field left of the campgate) I won in his auction in 2017.
I really like campgates and yours are looking good! I agree it's hard to find decent ones at decent prices.
Nice job @Pellinore ... GREAT looking Campgate LRB's! I have VIII and his Regent, but not in Campgate: RI Valentinian III 425-455 CE AE 9mm Rome mint (Hey, it DOES look a little like @Valentinian ! ) Just jokes... RI Aelia GALLA PLACIDIA Augusta Regent for Valentinian III 423-437 CE mother of Theodosius Æ4 Bust E - cross CID visible ex FSR 102 But, here's a Campgate... RI Constantine I CE 306-337 Æ Follis 19mm 3.2g Siscia CE 326-7 AVG Laureate R - PROVIDENTIAE AVGG Camp gate 2 turrets no door star RIC 200 Ex: The Gate Closer - @John Anthony
Awesome coins @Pellinore! I reallly like Valentinian III one. Here are some of my recent gates: Roman Imperial: Licinius I (308-324) Æ Follis, Heraclea (RIC VII 15; Sear 15264; Hunter 113) Obv: IMP LICI-NIVS AVG; laureate bust left, wearing consular robes, holding mappa and globe Rev: PROVIDEN-TIAE AVGG three-towered camp gate; no doors; HTΓ in exergue Roman Imperial: Licinius I (308-324) Æ Follis, Heraclea (RIC VII 48) Obv: IMP LICI-NIVS AVG; Laureate and draped bust right, holding globe, sceptre and mappa Rev: PROVIDEN-TIAE AVGG; Three-towered camp gate; no doors; Λ in right field; SMHB in exergue
Nice coins, I like them. Does anyone know why some of them have a star on top? (or any best guess perhaps?)
here's a campgate which is probably unofficial. It is a Valentinian III CASTRA (cf RIC X 2160) except the reverse legend is KA TRA
Here are two campgates of Flavius Victor. Neither is in good shape, so I'll post both and you can kind of piece them together in your head to get some idea of what the gates look like: (Bronze) AE IV Rome mint, A.D. 387-388 Obv: D N FL VIC-TOR P F AVG Rev: SPES RO-MA-NORVM - Campgate with star between two turrets Second coin: [RB?] in exergue RIC 59 13mm, 0.9g.
I love campgates and still have many of them on my want list. A few favorites... CONSTANTIUS I. AR Argenteus. CRISPUS. AE3. VALENTINIAN II. AE4.
