Not to be negative, but perhaps the propmaster actually recognized the "real deal", didn't realize anyone from the ancients forum would be watching and.......you know....

Why would you open a thread titled Jesus Christ Superstar Live when trying to avoid spoilers? :hilarious:

In high school, my ride to school was one of the leads. I can pretty much sing along line for line. :p

Sara has a breezy vocal casualness for one with so accurate a voice. If she desires, she could have a lengthy Broadway career. I understand she does well in other areas as well.

I, like Herod, was "umimpressed" with Alice Cooper's work. A big disappointment. It was a naked attempt to bring in another star where clearly a real voice would have helped. The opening of his number needs to be SUNG, not "read".

Yeah, Herod's Song" is one of my favorites from the original album. AC was simply a pandering, cutesy mess. He could have saved it by turning AC menacing at the end, but continued to sing it in a cutesy style. If he would have been more, idk, like Alice Cooper at the end it could have worked. In my head, I had him slamming down the staff and glaring "hey, arent't you SCARED of me Christ!"

Oh, how people can pick nits about matters of trivia! Really, the multitude of comments regarding the 'authenticity' of Judas's coins I find really rather hilarious and sad at the same time. It was a stage play, people, with fake scenery, metaphorical costumes and actions (machine guns, paparazzi with 35mm SLR flash cameras, etc.), wispy pieces of cloth representing palm fronds, etc. There is absolutely no good reason why the stage coins should have been any more realistic or representative than they were. They did their part in telling the story!
Another point that seems to be missed here is that it is the same story told in the original cast and in the movie...but it is not the same cast and production crew, and therefore should in no way be expected to have any similarity to the original and earlier productions than is dictated by the script and lyrics of the songs. I loved the movie when it came out and seeing it was quite literally life-altering for me as unlike our friend 4to2centBC, seeing that movie turned me away from the path to atheism to understanding that there is more to Jesus Christ than I ever thought before. The movie cast was great in their performance, and I love that movie to this day. But this performance I found to have a grittier and more human reality to it than the earlier work, especially in the performance of John Legend and Brandon Victor Dixon (Judas). Saea Bareilles was good as Mary Magdalene, but she certainly didn't bring to the role what Yvonne Elliman brought to it.
Sorry, that was quite the digression, when what I really had intended only to say was that arguing about the authenticity of stage prop coins is rather a pointless exercise at best.

This is posted on the Ancients board and nitpicking and appreciating ancient coins is what we do :)

I don't think any of us seriously thought the play suffered because of use of knock-out plugs. We just like to critique the depiction of ancient coins in modern media.

Like some of you, I saw the play on Broadway in the 70's, and the movie. I also wore out the sound track. I'm just wondering if it's just me, or did the show's tempo seem rushed and the scenes jammed together?

Yes it was...this is an ancient coin thread, not a film/entertainment critique thread.

Richard, you've been on CT long enough to know how this works...people make observations & give comments within their expertise (or just by desire), & occasionally pontificate a little outside the main topic. Until you commented, I don't believe there was any turmoil (No, we like Kurt, even though...you know...). I happened to appreciate the astute observation & comments....one of the reasons I follow the ancients collectors - they are a "different" breed & that is refreshing!:jawdrop:

Relax, go to the next thread.:happy::happy:

I remain amazed at the number of people who have absolutely no interest in ancient coins and have never posted a word on ancient coins who feel the need to jump in and provide expert opinions on subjects posted to the ancient coin board. Obviously we can flag their future posts to be ignored but there will be another and another to replace them. I'm sorry our topics on ancient coins bother those who are expert in their field. That is why we posted them here in under 'ancient coins' and not over in their venues.
