I know, I know, the general public does not know or care about coins, but if they are going to pull out "thirty pieces of silver" on screen, could they not do better than thirty dime sized steel blanks? Seriously, I would have bought them thirty fake Shekels of Tyre for the production.
Nicely produced concert/show though. I already ordered the cast album on iTunes. I had a London cast cassette tape from the 70's that recently gave out before I got it digitized. John Legend as Jesus was brilliant.
Yeah, I was wondering if I was the only home viewer thinking to themselves "Those look more like denarii than tetradrachms..." But still a great production, if not quite equal to the 1973 movie version. All the main cast were good to great, there was some impressive production design, and Alice Cooper was appropriately hammy as Herod. Plus I think I now have a crush on Sara Bareilles...
I knew I was not going to be the only one to notice those blanks as the 30 pieces of silver. It was a good show. For me the standouts were Sara Bareilles and Alice Cooper. As far as the rest of the cast goes...I thought the 1973 performance were better.
Nobody was better than Neely!! I got a chance to speak to Carl Anderson years ago, what an amazing duo those two were!!
Well, at least the show gave me an occasion to bring out my shekel of tyre and show it to my wife, who dutifully feigned interest. I thought the show was brilliant in every way—performance, costume, set design. And I am not given to superlatives. To keep it coin-y, here’s my Shekel. And here’s a surprisingly good cover of MM’s great song from that show.
Well considering the Roman soldiers carry machine guns, I wouldn't expect much period authenticity from the coins.
How do you know Romans didn't have machine guns? Seriously, don't give away the ending. We are in Indiana and have not seen a TV since last Wednesday so we DVR'd it and wouldn't want to have the surprise spoiled. I admit curiosity as to how Alice Cooper could beat fat Herod from the original. For the 30 Pieces, I would have used something recognizable like ASE's or Maria Theresa thalers. Whenever we adapt a historical story we have to decide if we are to make it look old style authentic or updated to have the same effect emotionally that the original would have had. The purists among you should be glad they didn't use Bitcoin (₿).
True, maybe no Machine Guns, but like I have posted before, I have PROOF of the ROMAN AIR FORCE! WITH women pilots! Known to be in the Third Century CE... (This is a true story @TIF ) RI Mariniana AR Ant 253-254 CE Crescent - On Peacock flying 21.2mm 3.1g RIC VII 6 Rome RI Paulina w Maximinus I D before CE 235 AE sestertius 30.77mm 19.66g 2nd emission of Maximinus I CE 236 Consecratio Peacock RIC IV 3
The Roman Air Force was an abject failure. It seems the dead pilots were unable to sight their targets.
I happened to tune in just as that scene unfolded. And like everyone else here...... I looked to see what they used for the silver. We all shared a moment. I've been a fan since the nuns made us see it as a kid. Unwittingly, it opened the Pandoras box of knowledge. Now I am a (boo hiss) atheist. But I still love the story. "could Mohammed move a mountain....or was that just PR?" btw Legend can sing, but he can't act.
Sara has a beautiful voice. AC was a funny marketing ploy, but I was under impressed. This far exceeded my expectations. The earlier live attempts such as Peter Pan/Grease/SofMusic/ etc were pretty sad. I thought these folks made for a good night of entertainment.
I'm only familiar with the original movie/soundtrack. I wore out the records when I was a kid - remember the double record set in the brown album? My dad got so tired of hearing those songs that he bought me my first pair of headphones, big clunky things they were back in the 70's. I looked like I was ready to direct a plane out onto the runway.
So after a long weekend of family time, during which I virtually abandoned CT for 3 days, today took the grandkids to the Cavanaugh Flight Museum in Addison (TX). This was a great experience (again), but I digress... so it's after 4pm & I am looking to unwind & decided I needed a dose of CT. Well... out of pure dumb luck I opened this thread first & it re-emphasized the reason I follow the ancients....where else,...I mean in what other thread would you find a critique of the props used in a theatrical production??? (Btw, they were knock out plugs.) No place else has such astute members, none! THIS IS WHY I LOVE THIS FORUM!!!!!! You guys & gals are great!!!!!
Kinda makes you wonder if the propmaster lost the coins they were supposed to use and in the 11th hour the crew hastily punched out the plugs from various electrical boxes around the theater!
