I realize that the thread title makes it sound a bit like I'm giving away ancient books, though one was published in 1952 and some of our modern friends here on CT might consider that ancient. It's not. They in fact are 2 books to help our friends whom are newer to ancients learn how to ID and know just what the heck they are looking at! Inspired by a few pals who have done giveaways in the past couple of months since I found this place of sharing, caring and ridonkulous coins! (@Severus Alexander ,@lordmarcovan and @jamesicus I'm looking at you guys). I have utilized both books and think it's time to pass them on. They are... Identifying Roman Coins is great if you are new to Roman Coins, cleaning uncleaneds or just trying to figure out what the heck all the letters wrapping around your ancient Roman mean??? Seaby's Roman silver coin 1 is all about Roman Republic and imperiatorial (one of if not my favorite areas...though they can get expensive!) If you are interested in winning one or the other please let me know which one, why it interests you and a good old ancient joke won't hurt your chances! And even if you don't want them and just have a good joke or meme, please share! (I'll keep this up till Wednesday and decide that morning...afternoonish).
Wow, those look great! Wish I'd read them several years ago (Don't enter me for the giveaway but it's a great gesture!)
I am interested in entering although I don't have a joke to share...sorry. Being fairly new to ancients, this is a VERY tough decision to make. One one hand the "Identifying Roman Coins" has A LOT of useful info for new collectors, and I could really use a book like this. On the other hand. I already have Seaby's "Roman Silver Coins" Vol II 1st edition (1954). So the "Roman Silver Coin" Vol I would go right along with it. I hope it is okay not to choose. If I win I will happily take whichever one you decide to send. Thanks for giving us "newbies" a chance at winning such great reference guides!! These will really help someone out.
I don't know which edition of RSC1 you have but I have two different ones and use both. I assume that is the 1952 book so it is one older than my older one. If so, I can only assume it also has the line drawings used later which I consider superior to the photos they used later. I'm away from home now so can't check dates. The 'problem' some here will find with the book would be that it predates Crawford so it does not reference his numbers as does the later, photo illustrated edition. If you live for a string of catalog numbers for your coins, this may not be the book for you but if yu want to see what was made in Roman Republican coins arranged in the old family groups system, this book would be something to own.
As always (that I'm aware) you're right on Doug! It is the '52 version. And it has drawings instead of pics. It is fun to read through, as it is by family, and makes it easy to ID RR...as long as you can make out the moneyers name. Plus, talk about a finally, the book ends with the coins of JC and Augustus!
I would like to enter please. If I was to win a book I would choose the identifying Roman coins book. Reason being I have a few Roman coins and it would be nice to be able to identify them. Thanks for the opportunity!
This one made me laugh...and worry And I thought I'd remind anyone interested in the giveaway to please let me know by Wednesday morning
