Used to see these commercials all the time. “Own your genuine Morgan dollar copy while supplies last.”.... I haven’t seen that TV commercial for some time but I used to see it routinely. Years ago these were given to me. I am working on thinning down my hoard. These are basically art bars to me and need to go. Does anyone know if these were minted in silver or just plated?
Yes, I would agree if they were silver it should say so. The rims are smooth and have nothing on them. To me, Silver has a ring when I drop it and I don’t really detect a ring. I’m going with plated base metal. I believe these will go in the grandkids stockings at Christmas.
I should have used Google before I posted this. I found the old commercial. National Collectors Mint (gee that sounds official)... Minted in 71 milligrams of pure .999 silver! Sorry for the wasted forum space.
I am sure the 71 milligrams in pure .999 silver is the plating. Silver is around 50 cents a gram. 1000 milligrams in a gram. I think that works out to 3 1/2 cents worth of silver. 16.35 silver spot / 31.1 grams per troy oz= .526 x.071= 3.7 cents.
I don’t think so, it’s not play money and it’s not the real deal either. My 5yr old boy got an 1882-S Morgan with nice toning for his birthday. He keeps it like a treasure under his pillow. I wouldn’t give him any junk/fake Morgans...
Do with them as you wish but keep one for yourself, just because. In the future years I think you'll be glad you did.
Keep one and if you decide not to give away the others, stick ‘em on a train track. That’s where most of the National Collectors Mint junk belongs.
Morgan copies don't make much sense when there are so many nice genuine uncirculated Morgans that can be had for not a lot of money.
