1913 Wheat Cent - Matte Proof Strike??

Thank you. I was really on the fence. Is a very nice coin. Not really an expert on matte proofs. All the mattes I've seen have those perfect flat rims. Better to be wrong then stupid. Not that makes alot of sence

 

More important than the rims are having the diagnostics present. Without those it wouldn't matter how flat the rims are.

 

I'd llike to see a grade of PR# details, plus GENUINE. Never seen this particular grade and there-in lies the ambiguity of the coin's MPL status, just by looking at the slab. Even Matte Proofs should receive a Proof numbered grade in addition to the word "details" due to cleaning, unless on the order form a customer specifies that, "Any Grade lower than ______ should simply be marked as 'Genuine'."

Thanks to this wonderful collaboration of educated hobbyists, I think most of us would agree that the totality of the evidence is overwhelming that we have a matte proof lincoln. Although when looking at a matte proof, one's attitude almost always shifts to one of skepticism, in this rare case, the optimists came through and provided the smoking gun, the die markers! Cheers to all of those who initially didn't let doubt pervade the discussion, thus prematurely shooting down this coin's chance of getting submitted & counted among the few.

One thing is for sure the turn around times at NGC are really impressive!

So if it had not been a Proof would they have labeled it "Business Strike- Details"?

 

They would have labeled it MS Details, but the coin is not eligible for Mint State because it is a Proof.

 

It would have been labeled "UNC DETAILS"

 

An important aspect is that this coin has now been authenticated as an MPL. No more guessing. Having 1 of 2848 is a lot more satisfying than 1 of 75.5 million.

I would almost always rather be pleasantly surprised after thinking it's possible, but too good to be true. Than to think, THIS IS IT! , and later be disappointed. So yes, I too like to be wrong about such things, as well!

Seems the bunny made some early rounds, but alas no matte proof Buffalo nickels in my basket this year. Maybe Santa will be more understanding and let me take care of one for the (NEXT) 40 years.

 

It looks like the coin isn't straight in the holder (z-axis).

The top front is tilted forward (not pushed in enough); the bottom part is in correctly.

I'm not sure if I should send this back in for correction though.

I tried lightly tapping it into place, but that did nothing.
