Since this site is the "Well of Knowledge", I thought I would try here, to see if anyone knows this script., Is this gibberish or are these real symbols?? Anyone familiar with them? It is on an Asian foundry object. TIA
It reminds me of Chinese seal script and earlier Chinese styles, but I could be very wrong. @Loong Siew might know something.
Yes, I was hoping LS or someone from that side of the world might chime in. I am puzzled. I have not been able to identify a single character.
no idea but maybe: https://www.cointalk.com/threads/ja...ication-translation-help.312463/#post-3018591
It's one of the earliest Chinese scripts, known from the Shang to the Zhou Dynasties. It was usually utilized on bronze inscriptions.
Do you have a picture of what the inscription came from? That might be a big help. Anyway, I forwarded on the photo to my friend in China. I'll let you know what he has to say, but he may have no idea either.
My friend has this to say: Hi Ken, Yes, it's a real inscription. But I can only read the second character,鼎 see attached. The third and forth charcter, look like a name李杉but I'm not sure.
Thanks everyone. The inscription is on some sort of scepter. I have made an offer and will post a photo once I hear back. It is a curious object, likely a reproduction or tourist item....or it may be original. I appreciate everyones input. I love a site filled with smart folks.
And the answer is.................it is a Chinese repro of a Tibetan Khatvanga. Offer retracted. Thanks to all.
