Got a nice example for reasonable price! After, I went 0-4 in Kunker event Best thing was coin has no defects common to these, like adjustment marks, copper spots, softness in strike....
Maybe it partially makes up for missing out on this? https://www.cointalk.com/threads/is-panzerman-at-it-again.313360/
Nice looking coin and a wee bit better mint mark. I've always thought 18th century French gold was vastly under-appreciated, especially compared to British, Russian, Italian or German gold most of which is extremely expensive aside from a few of the common British gold Guineas like the 1787 and 1798.
Your correct. Louis XIV/XV/XVI most have struck high numbers of Louis d'ors/ the 1/2 Louis d'ors are more $/ Doubles are still cheap for Louis XVI/ compared to British 2 Guineas/ Holy Roman Empire Double Dukats. The ONLY big gold coins that are affordable are the Spanish 8/ 4 Escudos fom Spain/ Colonial Mints. Lest we forget/ Britain struck most of her gold/ silver coinage from plundered Spanish gold/silver Little wonder that Philip II wanted to invade England and remove Elizabeth I (head).
Probably the only affordable (average collector)large denomination European AV coinage was the AV 8 Escudos from Spain (8 Escudos= 8 Dukaten) You can get MS grade 8 Escudos from Carlos III/ IV for 3K euros/ While your AV 5 Guineas UK= 50K AV10 Dukaten 75K.... But....there is another affordable large AV coin/ Papal States 1787 10 Zecchini=10 Dukaten. These go for 8K......
I got this little item around the time that the US gold Kennedy half dollars were being sold. France gold double Louis d'Or 1786-A (Louis XVI) Gold, 28mm, 15.24gm Slightly smaller and lighter than a United States $10 Eagle. From Heritage Auctions, graded AU with scratches. I was the only bidder. One can look up Louis XVI, he died young and rather suddenly.
French gold was one I had a particular interest in, just happened to like their designs better than most. I liked the hammered coinage the most, and Louie XIIII child designs one milled coinage came along. For some strange reason, back when I was still collecting the ones that were the hardest to find in really nice condition were the Louie XVIII gold. High AU to 63 was run of the mill, but higher grades, never did manage to find any of those. The earlier coinage, even hammered, never had a problem with those. And back then the grades were honest grades, not the nonsense we have today.
Honest grades.....here is a mint state (MS-60) from Heritage Auction to illustrate your point. Coin is so worn should be VF+. Compare that 1851 MS-60 Double Eagle to my Austro-Hungarian 4 Dukaten 1848-A graded by Spink as Mint State....
