Are you collecting all the business strikes? Proofs? Both? What's your favorite? Highest grade? One thing you gotta love. The series is still dead as far as pricing goes. The prices have barely budged in years.
I do it for my tupe collection dead you say where do i get good ones for cheap not in cn but in silver
ML: The only problem with that coin is that any others will look sick compared to that one. Nice coin.
I'm pecking away at the business strikes. My favorite so far is my 1883 - ANACS AU50. You are so right about pricing - I got that coin (mintage under 11,000) for $300.
I've got one for my typeset. The tough part is getting a fully struck one. The "III" on the reverse (particularly the first "I") often shows no ribbing in the middle. I've seen an MS-65 in that condition. I've seen an MS-66 with the full ribbing but with flat tops on the first "I". I shopped around for a while, but I finally got the one I wanted. Since it was for my typeset, I only needed one, so I could spend a bit more to get what I wanted.
I would actually love to buy a nice certified example of a Mint State coin in the MS63 - MS64 range from one of the years with the lower mintages, but these are hard to find. Currently, I have an uncertified 1881 that has a nice strike where you can see all of the ribbing in the III, but it's probably only a VF. I think it cost me about $18.00 or so.
I recently started collection them. Mostly in the F- vf range. I have most from the 60's and up to 76. The last few months I have been buying 1875's and 1876's. I hope to buy an 1879 in the near future also. Here ar a few pics of two of them. They are not quite the quality of the superb examples posted above.
Actually, that's quite an intelligent and perceptive thing to do. Personally, I own a number of 1875's and 1876's. I have everything from Fine to MS62 in 1875. 1875 is an extraordinary sleeper and it's mintage figures completely deceive the collecting public as to how many really remain for collecting. Most of them are in the VF range. It's extremely diffult to find a strong XF or AU example of this date.
Prethen and Vipergts2, I'll have to consider your points on the 75 and 76 but first I gotta get the 82, 84 and 85. Always nice when guys share information like that and I thank you guys. Now, if you get into 2 Cent Pieces let me know. I am a 2 Cent junkie!
I love 2-centers also. I still don't have an 84 and 85. Too many reasons why I haven't got 'em yet to list here right now. I may never own them in business strike. Bummer. On the other hand, I've been fortunate to squirrel away about 5 '82s!
Good job on your "hoard" of 82s. My "hoard" is 8 or 9 (I forget) small motto and 5 1872 2 Centers. Ones to look for are higher grade (AU and better) 1866 and fully struck 1867. Now back to those lovely 3CNs!
I really enjoy the three cent nickels for three reasons, One I think they look great with a nice portrait of liberty and a simple reverse, two you can pick up fairly low mintage coins for not a lot of money, and third is the oddity factor. How many people outside the hobby have even heard of two and three cent coins?:thumb:
All good points but I really like the one about people having never heard of them. Great reaction when you tell someone you just got a really nice Three Cent Nickel isn't it?
What really gets people is when you also mention there was a three sent silver (which was first). And then people can't get over that there was actually something else called a Nickel before they're beloved Jefferson 5-cent piece.
