someone brought me a 1964 2 coin Proof Set from Malta to appraise. I started researching Malta. It is now on my bucket list especially if they allow metal detecting.

I don't know a lot about their coinage, but I like to read their history...Phoenicians, St. Paul's shipwreck, Romans, Goths, Arabs, Normans, Turks, French, British, the German attacks in WW2. Metal detecting sounds like fun to me!

I googled the 1964 Malta Proof Set, and APMEX actually sells them, but they are out of stock.

"Limited Mintage! Only 1,000 of these 2 coin proof sets were made in 1964 so these are rarely offered for sale! The two coins contain a total of 1.1412 ounces of silver. The set comes in the case of issue."

I found 5 for sale on Ebay - $63-$99 price range. As for ones that actually SOLD on Ebay, I found 2 - sold for $33 & $65. If you search on there, I'd compare the quality of the Case, etc. to get a better estimate.

Thanks for the info. Sounds like melt on a bad day. I thought they were one of those machine jobs the bullion people put out.

All I know about Malta's coins is when I'm looking on Ebay for 1700's Sicilian Silver Tari coins, Malta's Tari coins pop up.

It doesn't say Malta on it but this coin was made for use in Malta by the British government, which controlled it at the time. 1913 britain one third farthing.jpg

I have quite a few modern silver from Malta...
Here’s a couple that are kinda rare.
