I wanted to ask you guys about this. This is my first question on the error coins forum. It has a scratch that is moderately deep, and goes past the plating, and underneath, it look like copper It weighed 3 grams (3.11 is copper, and 2.5 is zinc coated copper) A coin dealer said yes it is copper, before showing him the date, but after he looked at the date, he said no. My great-grandfather said it looks like copper The story: I was roll hunting, and saw a really bad, corroded penny, and saw it had a scratch that looked copper, but after looking at the date, I was like ????, then I remembered the story of an copper error from Numismatic News. It looks copper. Pics (only of the obverse):
I can barely tell its a Lincoln cent from those pictures... please try to upload some better ones so we can give more information... However for now, i can only ask how accurate is your scale... Does it go to the 10th of a gram, or even a 100th? A scale that only goes to the nearest gram will not be suitable in this situation.
To answer your question, it is eroded, so it is less than the 3.11 grams. It ways to the nearest 10th of a gram
I packed it away, I am getting a better scale like in a week a so, so I'll post with that. It will way to the nearest 100th of a gram
Well I don't no about the rest of these gents but there is no way in the world IMO based on the pics you provided that anyone would be able to give you there opinion. If I where to give you mine it would be a guess in the dark as if I was blind folded. LOL Dave
The weight to at least one decimal point is going to be the real key here. I'm afraid I cannot tell a copper coin from a copper plated coin from a picture. They both come out looking like........ copper.
