A couple of days ago I turned one year older, so a friend of mine gifted an old roll, some wheat cents (it was interesting to see that the older the coin got the more wear it had, and it was a set from 1886-1891 and 1897-1907), and the coin I’m going to post about. With regards to American coinage, I like many of the designs, but I’m too busy buying other stuff to concentrate on it, or it’s just too plain expensive at the time. This one in particular had one of my favorite designs. So here is a coin I am very happy to have despite its flaws. 52569541-B257-468F-85C4-BAEE0AB32E4B.jpeg EFEA3DEA-95BE-4C9C-B7D5-07A3B5BE5039.jpeg

A Flying Eagle in hand is always nice, no matter the condition. If it could talk, just think of the stories it could tell!

The Flying Eagle design and 3 Cent Silver designs were my favorites when I started collecting. Then, my taste changed as a teenager - Bust! Fifty years later, I’m back to Flying Eagles and 3 Cent Silvers again!

I have a raw one in similar condition. They are cool to have. :)

Flying eagle is one of the few images I would love to see recreated. Alas, I am sure Lincoln is here to stay. Just a lovely coin and what a cool find.

Some of my favorite 19th century base metal and silver designs are this one, the eagle on the 20 cent piece and trade dollar, and the bust types. My favorite 20th century ones are the Mercury dime and 1921 Peace dollar. Haven’t gotten around to getting any of those yet, except the Mercury dime. Of course I don’t count gold designs. That’s just me being mean to myself.
    Absolutely!

I got distracted by busts around that age, too, come to think of it.

Looks like something’s happening in the lower loop of the 8, might want to check the variety. :)

Is there any book you’d wish to recommend to research the varieties?

Unless a type you plan on collecting, buying a book based upon what may or likely is nothing is probably a waste of money. However, there is a lot of such info available online for free, so I would suggest starting with google.

Perhaps @ldhair could offer specific suggestions?

Rick Snow has several books out there. I believe he is the best there is on Flying Eagle Cents and Indian Head Cents. BooksB4Coins is spot on. Don't buy the book unless you plan to collect that same coin type.
I'll try to find a link later tonight with something on your coin.
