Completely different coins It’s also not a secret that NGC basically flat out refuses to grade modern toners
I think they take it to an extreme but it’s certainly their right to do so. Anyone submitting those to them could have known better with a quick search
They both did or they both didn't, after all they are just opinions.....Obviously both have been somewhere in some environment and both show the effects of what appears to be intentional toning. It is bullion and will always be bullion. Learn how to make your own and save yourself a lot of money...... To the op post not the above crap in post #8
I actually would have loved to own that Eagle while it was in the PCI holder. To me it is some of the coolest AT I've seen. Someone liked it enough to pass it by at PCGS. Allegedly, the owner of the coin turned down $5,000 in the PCGS holder, cracked it, and sent it back. Next time around it came back in a details holder-proof details!
I don't know why it was cracked. My guess was the person wanted to prove it would straight grade again. Unfortunately for them it didn't work out.
Concerning the 1st post, I think they both got it right. There is a difference in probability. I would let the PCGS pass as it is very difficult to AT an area of the coin that varies in depth and not have it follow the elevations. The NGC coin is th other side of the situation, rather easily done. Jim
If PCGS was aware that the coin had been straight-graded previously by them, I bet they were very happy to get the coin back cracked out so that their original grading opinion was no longer valid.
The NGC coin looks even worse in NGC's cert verification images: https://www.ngccoin.com/certlookup/4660059-004/NGCDetails/#group-1 And the reverse...
Until 2001 they refused to grade moderns period. With moderns defined as any coin minted after 1964. As for the TPGs making comments regarding toning - David Hall claimed that any Peace dollar with colorful toning was AT.
