Hey all, I just got done going through about 4 lbs of dimes. Found some nice coins to fill in some blanks in my Roosevelt folder. Anyway, I happened across a couple of dimes that I'd like some help with. First things first, I know these are worth......drum roll....10 cents! But I just want to see if I'm recognizing things so I can continue to learn. Ok so this first one could just be PMD, but it seems to be mostly raised as if something is on top of the strike. Perhaps extra material from annealing? I know there was a link posted in a thread recently that showed the minting process, if anyone has that handy I'd love to review it, might help me identify something like this easier. This next one seems a bit easier. At first I thought it was just a weak strike and maybe it still is but could it be the die wearing out on the 2 Again, i know that these aren't worth anything, just trying to exercise my "eye"
Dime #1 looks like PMD. At first I was thinking maybe a die crack, or lamination, but there is definite evidence of something running along the coin. The smoothed out section of Roosevelt's neck, and the area just below the 'L' point to PMD. Dime #2 looks more like struck through grease me.
Ya I see it now the smooth part where something may have dragged. Weird looking anyway. I hadn't considered struck through grease on the second dime, makes sense though. Thanks!
#1 could be a sort of Bi-Level Die Crack or a Shattered Die Crack http://www.error-ref.com/numerous_intersecting_bi-level_die_cracks/
Die crack coin # 1 Roosevelt dimes especially show signs of die cracks The second grease or die deteration
The first looks like it has a big scrape and extra build up from damage. The thing my eye is drawn to is the what looks like a stressed die coming from the rim. But that is most likely die deterioration, I think the OP needs to help us with, either better photos, or a description of the Cheek area.
