Kirk, you know its a release for you from the frustrations of your life. If not this, you might have to socialize , go to coffee shows and covfefe with the Phillie elite and really smart people who pretend to agree with every thing you say. You would decay in weeks and your cat would be masterless. Actually it may have already happened and the cat is on the keyboard. Maybe I will get into politics so I too can have a sense of humor you appreciate :) Nah! Jim

Jim, excellent post, but why the need to make up names (Hawking, Einstein, etc.)? You should have used Homer Simpson & Peter (American Dad)!:smuggrin::smuggrin:

I understand that geology isn't geography, Jim, but I'm FAAAR closer to Baltimore than Philly, that pesky state border notwithstanding.

Thank you. Apparently geology isn't spelling, either. (Respect begets respect.)

Full disclosure - I did not read through the entire 5 pages of this thread before posting.

I understand both sides of the equation here as I'm not new, but I am a novice. I came here with the express intent of learning, sharing, and having conversations with other collectors. Perhaps I'm not the norm, in my short time here I have seen quite a number of people that seem to show up and ask out of the blue if what they have is worth lots of money. That in and of itself isn't frustrating but I can see how if they refuse to listen to reason that would be frustrating. I've often times told people that attack my answer - "Why'd you ask me then?"

BUT - there are people, that are just so misinformed by the strike it rich youtube videos and other nonsense that it's hard to sway them. It's like they've been indoctrinated by misinformation. Take a devout christian and try to convince them that Hinduism is the true religion, they'll fight it tooth and nail (I'm nether BTW, just an example of trying to sway perceptions).

Honestly not really sure where I was going with this, other than to say it requires patience and a willingness to learn by all to gain more knowledge in this hobby.

Your entire post is spot on, except for two words from my quote here. Remove the words " It's like". It isn't like that, it is that.

My issue (it's probably about time I responded in here) is not with people that want to know if they've struck it rich, or if they've found something that has potential for a new variety, or similar.

What drove me to start this thread was a response to the countless number of new threads, by hit-n-run posters, asking (insisting in many cases) if their Zincoln with plating issues is a rarity they can now retire on. How many threads are there about Zincolns on this board, and in almost every one of them, there is a mention of plating issues.

And in regards to the search function, in most cases, there are enough Zincoln threads that all they have to do is look through the first page or two and READ, and then be realistic about what they have in their hand.

Sure, when we all started, we thought we had the end-all coin, and that there was going to be a parade for us because of the amazing coin we found. Difference is, many of us were able to see through the daydream of coin infamy, and took the time (all of what, 10 minutes?) to research about what we thought we were seeing, and take a realistic view of the coin.

That's all I (and I guess others) are hoping for, that if people think they've just found a coin worth thousands, it shouldn't be too much trouble to ask them to do a little bit of work (research) in return for their new-found fortune, before screaming to the world and looking like a dang fool. ;)

And all that WITHOUT an Internet to turn to. Imagine that! We had "libraries", and mine was "only" a 20-minute walk south of where I lived. And on the way there, I passed TWO brick and mortar coin shops, neither of which still exists. The library still does.

Well, I have certainly asked my share of stupid questions, but no... I didn't 'coin' the phrase.

How does one know when one has asked one's share? See? The Farce does not answer ALL things after all.
