Hi All, I just got a call from my CU telling me that their machine filled a bag of half dollars and do I want them? Question for all my fellow CT member's, did anyone ever get a half dollar machine filled bag from their bank or CU? if so how was the final count? Was their actually any silver halves in there? I am curious if I am wasting my time with this, because if their machine rejects silver than why do it.
I'd say the simple and straightforward answer is you won't know until you buy the bag. If you have some clown filling the machine up as a $500 (or more) box dump then you likely won't find anything. Let's say it's a mixture of many deposits from the general population then your odds will be much higher of finding silver or other good coins. I've not bought machine coin bags myself before but it is very common to read of silver being found in them from members on here.
There is a tiny chance it is a older person cleaning out "junk" before they move to the other world. But most likely another CRH dumping them and the CU looking to move them out.
BUY BUY BUY, Hey you never know but at least it will not go through the String and son no silver sorter.
Wait, you mean to tell me NF String & Son has a sorter that rejects silver? I bought 4 boxes of NF String a month ago and pulled 8 40%ers out of the box. Do you think they were old boxes maybe?
Yes, I'd want to know how long they think it was since the last fill-up. If it was days, not so good. If it was six months, go for it. On the other hand, if it was just days, there could be some recent year NIFC dates.
I have heard stories of this Yes, They are sick of CRH. People get boxes that say in red on them Not sure what but like Silver sorted out. And I do not know if it is just string and sons
Do you have any roads or bridges near you that charge tolls? I tend to seed the economy with half dollars that way.
Anxious to hear the results. Let's say there are a few good coins in there. Are you able to get rid of the rest at face value with no fees? It would take a little while but couldn't you just spend the money over time at various outlets? Gas station, coffee shop etc. Then you don't have to worry about dumping anything. On the String and Son, I thought an earlier post/thread implied that the workers were pulling out the silver and not some silver sorter coin machine.
Nobody likes them. I just thought spending them at face value is better then paying some kind of "fee" to turn your coins into cash, which I find ridiculous. Since you would have to pay cash or credit for those purchases anyway, what difference does it make if you spent it in Kennedy half dollars? It's not costing you anything to spend them, but it can cost you to dump them.
When they finally stop producing halves and all the silver has been culled, life will be idyllic again.
I always buy the half dollar bag. Some of my best silver hauls have come from them. I found 51 silver halves in the very first bag I bought and was hooked, lol. I agree, if you can find out how long the bag was on the machine that is useful information. The longer the better. The bank machines I buy the bags from do not reject silver, yours might (such as a Coinstar). Also, a different bank of mine has coin machines and since they won't let me buy the bags, I dump some of my searched coins there for no fee. The others I roll and deposit at Wells Fargo. Good luck and let us know what you find!
If I had that oppritunity, i'd take it. There's always a chance, and all it really costs you is time. Now if you have to pay a fee to get rid of them, that's a much different story. Yes, it could be someone's dump, but it could not be... and could be a silver (gold) mine! Looking forward to the results. Edit: Plus the next time the bag fills they'll think of you, and that could be the good bag!
Because it's not just silver. There is the 74-D doubled die, several dates with "no FG", and of course the NIFC's and occassional impaired proofs, foreign coins of the same weight/diameter, etc. My bank won't sell me the bags but even in boxes, my experience has been that non-silver "keepers" outnumber the silver stuff so there's almost always something fun to find!
Hey All, Just went to the CU and picked up the bag and the teller says you know it is a $1,000 bag right . I was expecting a $ 500.00 bag which I know their new coin machine's limit is for half dollars, so I asked her how is it this bag is $ 1,000.00 and she point over to a corner and say's we revived old betsy?? This machine looks like it is from the 70's..LOL. So I had just enough in my account to buy the bag so we will see tonight what lurks inside. TexAG gave me hope of finding silver in there. I posted a pick of the bag for now.
