Hello All, I've been active in CoinTalk forums on and off over the years, but I think that this is the first time that I've posted in the "World Coin" section of these forums. So, Hello! I've been slowly building a North American copper type coin collection for a while (Or more precisely, non-silver/gold, pre- 1950). I've recently become interested in investigating where my coins rank in the NGC population reports. I was checking the 1882-1883 2 centavo reports, and also got these results: What are these coins? They are obviously copper/bronze, as they've been assigned BR/RB/RD designations. However, I can't find them described in "North American Coins and Prices", nor on any of the websites that I've used to generate lists of coins needed for the collection. I know that states issued coinage pre-1872, but I thought that was limited to fractional Reals (coppers anyway). Can anyone shed some light on these? And how I can obtain a comprehensive list of these types of issues? Thanks!

Thanks a lot! Pattern coins struck by a German company that never went into federal production. That explains why I couldn't find any information in coin related resources, as they aren't technically coins, but "Tokens". I'll definitely make note of these, but won't add them to the collection list just yet. There are already way too many coins that fall within the realm of "North American Copper" than I'll probably ever be able to track down and afford. Last thing I need to do is start adding salesman sample coins
I guess there are only 2 reverses for these coins, the generic one for the different mints, and then the "Independencia". I suppose adding 2 additional coins to the list wouldn't expand it all that much That leaves the "Private Coinage Republic of North Mexico/Rio Grande" coins though. Do you know what the story is with those? Were they government issued coins for circulation? What does "Medallic Issue" mean? Thanks again for the help!
"Medallic art includes aesthetic and commemorative medals struck with special care and often with higher relief than seen on coins." I don't have any information to share on these issues, but I did find a listing at HA. Hope it helps. https://coins.ha.com/itm/mexico/wor...525.s?ic4=GalleryView-ShortDescription-071515
Nuts. I thought this (Mexico after about Maximilian) was the one area I knew something about, but I had never heard of these either
Ya, it helps, $1610, I think I'll leave this one off the list for now Thanks again for the help, learn something new every day! Now you know! Maybe their existence was the last knowledge gap that needed filling. But probably not! That's what keeps it interesting
