    HArd to still make out, but it looks more like a grease filled die, but could be wrong. Are you using the macro mode?

    yeah and through a loupe also
    i will try to get some better scans on the wifes scanner

    Looks like a clashed die.
    the image of Abe is clashed onto the reverse die.

    all i saw on that last pic was mush :) is very hard to see anything at all.

    This is a case of progressive, indirect design transfer -- a form of die deterioration. A mushy, incuse version of Lincoln's bust was transferred to the reverse die through the intermediary of hundreds of thousands of struck planchets. It's a common effect on wheatback cents, especially those from the late 1940's.
