So u see, when I found this box of pennys seperate from his jug of pocket change, I had to assume he had these seperate for a reason. Its an obvious fact that I honestly don't know (...) from shine-ola. Dont claim to. So i ask for all of u to bear with me and RELAX!!!! LOL.. u guys have me scared to show anything. I'm gonna post a pic and get assassinated..lol...

Nothing wrong with asking questions here. Most everyone will gladly help you out.
It would help if you did some research on your own prior to posting though. You'd probably be able to answer a lot of your own questions that way :). Just make sure your pictures are clear/in focus, and you describe what you think you see. Don't make us guess.

Also FYI, this is a "family friendly" thread and the mods don't take too kindly to swearing. You may wanna edit your post.

The one thing we all must learn to accept is that when we began in this hobby, we didn't know squat. There are a lot of us here, myself included, who started decades ago, and the only way for us to learn was through libraries, telephone calls, snail mail and face-to-face contact.

You and a lot of others are fortunate that you have the use of the internet for instant information, but you must also keep in mind that not everything you read is necessarily accurate. So, it is in your best interests to take it slow and weigh everything before making rash decisions.

Posting photos and asking questions certainly won't put you on anyone's hit list, but when someone refuses to take sage advice from collectors who have been around the block thousands of times, it really doesn't do you any good.

You need to develop a thicker skin. There are some of us who have a sense of humor that isn't always obvious. Not everyone will use emojis to support their comments. For example, in another thread, I used a "pun" (play on words) to indicate that "common sense" carried little value........."common cents".

Yeah, occasionally we get someone here who gets really nasty because they take offense to the comments of others and they usually get the boot. Remember, the owner of this site wants to keep the conversations and images clean like 1950's television.

In the meantime, welcome to the neighborhood.

    Chris

There's a difference between someone coming here to act like an idiot and someone genuinely new. If certain members cannot see the difference, to hell with them.

Yes, this is a two-way street and most of us (aside from those wanting to play expert anyway) expect new folks to do their part and at least attempt to learn for themselves. It can be hard and much doesn't make a lot of sense to the uninitiated, but the effort is what counts. You seem sincere to me and for this reason alone I see no reason for anyone to be giving you smack.

The same with your photography. There's a couple guys here who post complete crap yet act as if they're producing professional quality images, and all while belittling the results of others. If you need help with imaging, simply ask, but be sure to explain exactly what you want to achieve and what you have to work with. Some folks haven't a problem going out and dropping a few hundred or even a couple grand on a dedicated macro and/or setup, but this isn't for everyone. Perfectly acceptable coin images can be produced with even the most basic and/or inexpensive equipment; the key is knowing how to use it.

Unfortunately, sometimes having thick skin really is a neccessity on this forum.

I've found it helps if I imagine every post is being stated by Statler and Waldorf:

Do you remember Martha Raye ever keeping it clean on the Buick Berle show or Red Skelton? ;););)

I didn't watch those shows that often. I was too busy gambling at the poolroom.

Lol..this has been said to me alot here. Do more research before posting things. Well the research I've done is what brought me here. I was told by the lady at heritage auctions and another guy to come here and I will get answers to my questions. (...) Is it that big of a deal? Im trying to learn. Some of u act like I should know all this before I come here. That makes no cents(ha!)...

Or maybe take it a step further and clarify the fact that if speaking of US coins, they're cents.

It really is all about research and a lot more research. Before computers we were all in the dark for the most part. It boils down to still picking up a couple of good books to get started. The Red Book and a book on grading coins is an investment that will do you no wrong. So many questions can be answered with a couple of good books. Then, if still in the dark, we are here. Someone can always post you a link to almost any type of coin where there is more than ample material for you to learn from. None of us expect anyone to know everything before they ask questions but as so often happens, a lot of folks do no research at all and then just expect us to answer all their question asap. And a lot of times they are not willing to accept our answers as fact. So therefore comes the more research. If after 5 people give the same answer and that person is not willing to accept it, would you not also become frustrated? (Not talking about you in this case, but others). Books and Chris gave some sound advice above. Hunker down with a couple of books my friend and patience is still a virtue.

I completely understand. The thing is I did a lot of research ( or so I thought) before coming here. Only to be told basically not to listen and not to believe it so can u see my frustration? Then i come here asking questions and getting blasted..it' cool though. I get it. Let' just say this is about my only resource. This phone. Going to shops and libraries isn't an option for me..hence the questions. Especially since I was told this was the best place to get answers to my questions.

I've actually thought about bookmarking posts from the type of person you alluded to above. The type that will post coin after coin after coin, never showing even the slightest interest in learning for themselves, instead expecting the forum to do it for them - think 69-S and the different 82 cents. Clearly all they're here for is the hopes of a big score, and if they were to find one, then they'd want us to guide them through whatever process that would result in the greatest return, all without showing even the slightest appreciation. The idea was that it may serve as a good example to both the new (on how not to behave) as well as those who accuse us of being hard on newbies and/or unwilling to help them. While I cannot speak for anyone else, I think such accusations are growing very, very old...

It's just a tad ridiculous to hear from other members, often those who don't go out of their way to assist the new, attack those of us that do. Obviously they're not bothering to read or follow such threads, so maybe a little put up or shut up is in order. ;)

Then I completely understand also. I live in a small village with hardly any collectibles books available. Your phone is good enough. But please do not use You Tube as a go to as there is very little there about coins that is of much use. Glad to have you here and we will do our best to help. You will NEVER see me blast anyone. But if you ever do decide to get any books, I've found some of the best prices at Wizard Coin Supply and I think Chris has used P J's Corner as a good source. Carry on and have fun.
