Recently, as I wrote in another thread, I received a nice XF Details SL Half Dollar. It had been overdipped Wanting to get it back to a "normal look", I asked about how to do that. The answers I received suggested every thing from baking and frying with various vegetables (really!) to dipping in bleach. What I have done is simply put the coin in a leather wallet and set it on the dash of my car. This was about 4 days ago. Opening it today, I can already start to see the results a light purple blue "toning" is occuring, although very light at this point it does not look as though it will be unattractive. My question is this, would anyone like to see the results as they occur? I can post a pic about once a week if any are interested to see how this learning experiment works...
AT (artificial toning) can happen for a number of reasons. High sulfur content and heat make toning happen the fastest and your leather wallet probably had both. Post pictures. I would love to see the progression. Cameron Kiefer
Hmm not only would I be interested but that would be a nice addition as an informative page at my site... let me know if you are interested!!! Have fun collecting!
Yeah, that would be interesting. I have a circulated commem that I'm working on and have been taking picts every step of the way. When I get it into a PCGS slab or badybag I'll be satisified. It's a blast white VF that has been cleaned and is just for my personal collection.
Sure, would love to see the progression. Do you know what it was overdipped in? I just tried scanning and taking pics with digital cam of my toned coin (posted in Testing Area). Neither way showed the colors very much. Guess I need better lighting or something. The colors are showing up brown in both the scan and the digital --- hope you have better luck. Thanks for sharing! 8)
I am in the process of putting together an "Adventures in Toning" Website. Coming soon to a browser near you !
