I went to my first ever coin show a few weeks ago. It was a very small show in a small town near me (Paris, Ontario). No online vendor listing - so I didn't know what to expect at all. Ended up there were no Ancient Coin dealers really.. although 4 or 5 dealers had some ancients in books... certainly not their main focus. A lot of it looked over priced (especially anything silver in my opinion) but with my limited experience I could be wrong. So I took the safe route...bought some flips and other supplies and found one book with a dealer who had a bit of everything - his table was a bit of a mess really..but one page in a book had these... 3 for $10. Picked up this bit of loot and was very happy I made the trip.

Very cool. The centaur alone is worth more than you paid for all 3. Score!

Great buy, that's what ancient coin collecting is all about, the satisfaction one gets from picking up a piece of ancient history 1700 years old and not paying an arm and leg for the pleasure.

Centaurs are not a common type.

    Good score.

Great centaur, and the wreath on the reverse of the Licinius is more than a little cool as well.

NICE @Clavdivs ! GREAT snares at 3/10! Like others, I really like that Centaur...

I do have a Centaur from Italia... This one is from the Frentani... coastal cousins of the Samnites. They were involved in 3 Samnite Wars (343-290 BCE) with the Roman Republic as the Romans were growing up. These same Samnites and Frentani were the peoples that fought Rome in the Social War (91-88 BCE). They were even instrumental in the Battle of the Colline Gate at Rome in 82 BCE fighting for the Marian Party against Sulla. The Samnites of Italia were never truly "friends" with Rome...

(Here is a better example of what I have so that you can see the Centaur... )

All three are fully identifiable if not earth shaking beauties. All three are genuine and representative of the style of coins from their periods and mints. Such coins are every bit as educational as mint state examples would have been except, perhaps, for seeing minor details of letter formation where corrosion made some less clear than others. Coin collectors will tell you that poor grade coins are a waste of money and your grandchildren will not retire on the profit from selling your collection but what you got out of the experience of the show and can still get studying every squiggle on the coins would be hard to find cheaper. I'm glad you made the trip and I hope you will have the opportunity to go to larger shows in the future.
