Recently @seth77 posted a couple puzzle threads, including one with denier tournois. I really enjoyed trying to identify the coins. In emulation of Seth I have decide to post my own medieval mystery coin. The coin in question is in decent shape for the issue, is silver, and has a diameter of 19mm and weight of 1.39g. I have not seen one of these coins posted on the Ancient forum, so hopefully it wont be too simple of a puzzle to figure out. Country may be fairly easy but hopefully the ruler is a little bit more of a challenge. Most importantly, have fun and good luck!
I LOVE medieval coins...but only have 4. However I want to learn more so will throw my hat in the ring. Is it Scottish?
I only dabble a little with medieval coins so definitely tough for mw but I think I got lucky and stumbled across one. I'll pm you so others can guess still. (if im right that)
That was quick @Ryro Scotland it is. The reverse reads REX/SCO/TOR/VM+ Now which Scottish king is hopefully the real puzzle.
I'm very glad to have inspired interest in the coinage of the European Middle Ages! Good luck figuring this one out!
Thanks! (though that was, as you said, the easy part). Let's see if my sleuthing had paid off... Is it Robert the Bruce?
I think I see IOHANNES... so my bet is John Balliol (1292-1296). His father founded Balliol College, Oxford, and his son was a rival claimant to the Scottish throne vs. Robert the Bruce. ?
Congrats @Milesofwho and @Severus Alexander you guys both got it. It's John Balliol, also know as Toom Tabard. Thanks to all that guessed, I hope it made for a fun puzzle. John ruled Scotland from 1292 to 1296 and is noteworthy for signing the Auld Alliance with France and being deposed by the nobles of the kingdom. In his place William Wallace and Andrew de Moray would eventually lead the Scottish struggle against Edward I. It would not be until 1306 that Scotland would have a king, that being Robert the Bruce. @Ryro I only wish I had a coin of Robert the Bruce, but they are beyond my budget. His mint output was low and the coins are in very high demand.
