This is what one of my favorite ancient coin dealers showed me when I asked him at a coin show if he had any modern coins: Peru, Lima mint 1/2 escudo 1821, struck under Ferdinand VII. This is a scarce type, and the last half escudo minted at Lima under Spanish colonial rule. A nice addition to my Latin American Spanish colonial collection. Even more surprised when he let me have it for bullion price. The picture is not very good, the coin is much better in-hand.
Thank you, John. Yes, I was amazed when he mentioned the price (80 euros). I have done a lot of business with this dealer over the years, so it is possible he was knowingly doing me a favor. What is also likely is that since he only focuses on Greek and Roman coins, this one just slipped by him. Don't know. At any rate, I was very happy to have it.
I am happy you got it, Eduard Hopefully, Germany will win its 5th World Soccer Championship in Russia this Summer!
Wow! really nice coin and even better that you got it for that price!!! I got one this year too. Congratulations sir!
This is the last coin I added to my new world collection too. it shows some lamination in the reverse, but I really like this small coin.
That is a beautiful 1/2 Escudo, Biurs92! Probably one of the best for the date. Congratulations. I hand't realized how scarce these late-date Lima colonial 1/2 Escudos are.
Eduard, I think they are extremely rare in high quality. I had been looking for a FDC ex. for ten years, this was first one. My friend, Victor told me that he had an eye on it, so....was glad he was able to secure it.
And to think that I had to think twice before accepting the dealers price.... I guess I was lucky. Victors coin is really superlative.
Thank you Mr. John and Mr. Eduard, this 1/2 Colonial Escudo from Lima is a rare type from 1814-1821. I have a friend, expert in Peruvian numismatics, that told me that for this type around 300-350 were minted (I think each year), and many of them were melted that is why it is rare. There is one that MA-Shops is selling, a 1815 Ferdin VII 1/2 Escudo Lima XF/AU for $2038.00 USD. And Yes Mr. Eduard, you had a super great deal!!
Excellent find. I once asked a world coin dealer if he had any US coins. He said he had one that I could have for a dollar. I paid to "do him a favor" and then completed our deals on world coins. When I examined the US coin in my leisure at home it was an AG 1795 cent.
