Just a thought concerning this 1800/79 NC-5. https://coins.ha.com/itm/large-cent...ybidspage-lotlinks-12202013&tab=MyBids-101116 Breen lists this as R8- with three known and that guide is apparently being used by Heritage Auctions. But my new Noyes books show four pictures of four known coins with this being the fourth finest. Should it now be listed as R7+ since all of the four are available to collectors. The reason I ask is because while Noyes shows and lists four, he lists it as R8-. Is there a bit of rarity inflation or just an oversight?
I passed on this (or one like it) believing it is the S-121. But not knowing if it had the beaded (plain) edge or the typical gripped edge. I concluded what appeared to be a serif on the B was simply an extraneous mark. But I've been getting these wrong with disturbing frequency lately and I hope this is another example. But even a S-121b is a great pickup at that price. I didn't return mine for $120 which was called a plain edge because the value was close enough for even a gripped edge. There is enough detail, I suspect you will be pleased when it arrives. ps I can't find the thread you mentioned. I'd love to see it.
The above post triggers a question I have on my own S-121b. Does this look like a concavo-convex planchet used on many 1796 varieties?
Yes,key feature is the small fraction and the point of leaf below the right side of the D in UNITED. On the other small fraction rev (271, 272,and 273) that leaf point is under the LEFT side of the D. Probably neither one, just using the reference they had on hand. They may not have a copy of Noyes and the cataloger Mark Borchkardt was the person that did the editing on the Breen book so he would be very familiar with it.
The variety attribution on this one should be simple, but the Die State/Stage is complicated. It had damage on the obverse which might be PMD or or strikethrough. Possibly double or multiple strikes. Comments and theories desired. Enhanced for detail:
Here is an unattributed R5(-?) currently on eBay (ends tomorrow) in pretty good condition. I'm only suspicious because the story involves a metal detection find and that seems to be the story often used when poor fakes are sold on eBay. But this is either real or one of the good fakes. https://www.ebay.com/itm/1796-drape...e=STRK:MEBIDX:IT&_trksid=p2055359.m1431.l2649
Jack tells me they haven't identified a fake S-95 yet. But who knows what tomorrow will bring? I've picked up five S-95s in just over a year, but this isn't a S-95. Look at the triplet at E of ONE along with the position of the triplet at U of UNITED. I've picked up two of this variety in just over a year.
The 1798 is an S-167 in what looks like die stage VI. The reverse crack does extend to the center dot, and the die chips are now forming between the IT in United.
I gotta get a huge monitor. Oh should get computer first. Hey can i plug and big monitor into my i pad?
With the proper adapter, maybe. The iPad just puts out the signal the monitor is what creates the image. So if you had a monitor that could accept a USB signal, and adapter to go from a standard USB plug down to a Mini or micro or whatever the iPad has, you might be able to do it.
