Narrowing my interests, Themes?

Hi all, as some of you have already read I'm trying to get a little more serious with my coin collecting. It's largely been putting together sets in folders with a few exceptions for most of my life but I'd like to move past that and get some nice pieces and narrow my scope a bit. Right now I have unfinished sets of practically all 20th and 21st century US coins sans a few of the early dimes and nickels.

While I still have interest in completing my sets from circulated pieces I'd like to focus a bit more on slowly acquiring more closely related coins, Themes for example. While I'm quite familiar with the common US coins of the past 100-200 years I really just don't know what else is out there for coins that were not released for circulation or perhaps coins from other countries. My red book has been great thus far in learning about some things I didn't know about. However, I was sort of inspired by a listing I saw of Ship themed coins and it got me to thinking, I wonder what sort of themed coins are out that I might be interested in.

I'm aware of collection themes such as 1 coin from every country, or of certain era's, but I was thinking more along the lines of the Ship example I gave. I dunno, just trying to brainstorm and see what's out there, it's hard to sift through thousands of listings to see what may or may not exist.

buildings, farm related (implements, animals, crops), transportation (trains, autos, etc), explorers, coins honoring foreign diplomats or countries, war heros, battles, fish, reptiles, birds, space exploration

That's what I could think of off the top of my head. You'd probably need to go world coins for many of those, but could be good.

One theme I would really like to see in a display is "last silver to first plated" with an example of each last/first showing the countries and their modernization. When it happened, what drove them to silver price reality, and such...

    Interesting concept!

Another theme could be "coins you want to give to Brett" and I'm also very interested in this theme from a personal standpoint!

    Happy Hunting!

I was thinking about animals but perhaps more specific. A good one to consider.

Lots of good ones there, many I wouldn't have thought of on my own.

That would be an interesting theme, I mean the silver/clad thing, not so much the coins for Brett thing.

Well, I think I lied. I'm not going to pick just one theme because I learned that there are a few coins or medals that have Jeeps on them, mostly France from what I saw. So I'll probably add some of those to my collection, but I also want to do something that is actual currency. I'm leaning towards animals because I've seen some really nice coins that I like featuring animals and it gives me lots of things to choose from.

If you consider tokens, your choice of theme is virtually unlimited. Just for Civil War tokens (which circulated like regular coinage), Kanzinger lists 58 general topics (some of the more unusual:Orphans and twins (80), Breweries (55), Die Sinkers (19), Fish Markets (12), Hair Restoration (6), Bee Hives (5), Rags (3). He breaks those down further into specific themes such as Blood Purifier, Barrel and Tea boxes, Butter Packer,Fireworks, and several hundred others.

To include other tokens would expand your choices to a near endless list. One theme I collect is my last name appearing on a token. Another theme I collect is one of oddity good fors: Good for 3 buckets of Slop, Good for 5 chickens, Good for a tune, Good for a Smile, Good for 87 & 1/2cents.

Ok, you got my ear. Can you post a pic of a French coin or medal with a Jeep on it? I can't say I've ever seen one that I remember.

Here's one I came across, there were a few variations as well. This was as far as my search went for now, but I plan to keep looking.

Oh, and building off from the Animals suggestion which interested me I think I'm going to look at collecting Wildlife Coins. So this would exclude pets and livestock but still give me plenty of things to look for. I'll start off with some inexpensive and easy to find examples first and as time passes I'll hopefully be able to acquire some very nice pieces. The goal would be to have mostly MS coins, but maybe the odd AU coin would be ok too, depending on how it looks. Excited to get started choosing things to look for!

    Will ya look at that!

A wildlife collection will be very nice, just be prepared for tons of coins and medals to fit the description.

Ya I know it really gives me a lot to choose from so I need to get the "gotta collect em all" mentality right out of my head. I may also decide to stick to even more specific things, like mammals for example. Time will tell where this takes me, but I think it's a good starting point. Some of the coins featuring various wildlife have always caught my eye.

You are not kidding, i have around 1,000 world coins and about 40% of them have some sort of animal on them.
