Brought my first Greek coin today

    ..nice coin of a really famous king... he was the inspiration of the Mithridatum medicine and used in modern poetry by a e Housman and Ralph Waldo Emerson. Congrats on your 1st buy! :) mithradates vi 002.JPG mithradates vi 003.JPG

    Obv.: Head of Mithradates VI as Dionysos, wearing ivy-wreath.
    Rev.: AMIΣOY beneath cista mystica; on which rests panther skin and thyrsos; monograms to left and right.

    Most of these types were issued from each of the cities in the area. Amisos was most common but a couple others are findable with a little looking. My new coin is Amastris and has a better Medusa than my previous examples from Amisos and Sinope. I would be nice to get the set but you don't see all cities in all types wit any regularity. Poorly struck and rough is par for the course but there is the appeal of decapitation and gushing blood to offset condition. These decapitation coins do make falling horsemen look peaceful in comparison. How many other coins are this gory?

    Amisos AE28 It seems most of these from Amisos have larger designs and less lank space around than the other cities.
