The coin that JB nonchalantly talks about in that video, pointing out all its “flaws”, is tied for the finest ever known example ever found. That makes it so misleading to be an outright LIE!

You're not going to find an MS-67 '83-D in circulation but this is chiefly because this coin is rare rather than there are no uncs in circulation. You actually can find a few '82 and '83 Uncs in circulation!!!

Numismatic News ran a series of articles about how tough these were in April/ May 1985 and lots of coins were pulled from circulation. Most are AU or sliders but a few were true Uncs. It's not too unusual for these to find their way back into circulation. Just last November I found a 1982-D that is very gemmy. It could go MS-65 pretty easily if the slight friction on the high points is forgiven. There's no rub and the luster is intact but the high points have a little friction.

Of course the '82-D is far more common in Gem than the '83-D.

Until just seven years ago or so I'd find an Unc '82 or '83 in circulation every year or two. Now I rarely see more than a couple AU's. I go through a couple hundred rolls a year or less.

I save nice well made coins above XF now days. I don't bother much with the ones that are poorly made from worn dies. Nice attractive coins of these dates are tough in any grade and this goes double for the '82-P. The '83-P is hard to find without scratches.

This makes sense to me now concerning 1983 with respect to the Kennedy half dollar. I’m keeping the best 10 of each year/mint mark for all of the Kennedys to build albums for my grandkids. Pretty much have AU (in some cases Unc) for all of them except 1983 where my best keepers are much worse. Reading this thread and in particular Kurt’s post gives me the reason why.

I do have nicer 1982 and 1983 pieces, but the trick to getting them was getting them early, when they were current.

To be clear about YouTube, it is precisely their system of incentives that makes misleading videos happen. It's all about numbers of views, and sensationalism, and NOT useful or correct information, which to be honest, often lacks "sizzle" or "sex appeal".

Here's my 2 cents about YouTube,no pun intended! I'm a new Numismatic and I had the privilege of finding out the hard way as the other gentleman did. The garbage they put out astounds me. The amount of videos falsifying finds and other claims is ridiculous. One such video claims to have found a 100,000 cent and only talks about errors. But at the beginning says he's giving silver away when he gets 30,000 subscribers. Of course like, share and all the other gimmicks to get views.

Being new I swallowed the info and started the search, boy was I naive.

After 4 days of searching and hording I found this sight and was let down that I had wasted all that time and energy on nothing. Is there anyway to report these videos for false info or something we can do to help new people not fall for these BLATANT lies?

@Richard gladfelter Glad then that you found us. I'm thinking it's a fruitless endeavor to report everything we see that is wrong with folks making us look bad with all their nonsense online. But, it's up to us here and on other coin forums to keep everyone as informed as possible and fight the good fight. I'm on another site called Listia and today received a message from a fellow Listian that someone who had picked up a lot of my coins there had done a You Tube video claiming one could get rich by reselling what I sold to her. It was utter nonsense. I could have left a comment but the maker of the video could easily hide the comment, just as you can do on Facebook. So, you see, it's pretty hard to try and protect people. You Tube, for me, is only good for music I'm looking for or how to repair something myself. All else is off my list for that site.

Great! Now, what ELSE can we do to smack down this menace that is YouTube? And I chose the word "menace" very carefully, too. I heard on This Week in Tech earlier today that a university study found that false information travels 6 times as fast as true information on the 'net.

I've gotten the point that I don't believe ANYTHING on the 'net without second sourcing it with a traditional source.

I watched the video I mentioned. These were normal and average 1964P Lincoln Cents, and we all know the value of them. I traded them off at a fair credit value. She was claiming that if sold by "Get It Now" individually per coin, at a set price, that she could make around $100.00 in credits value and so could everyone else. Very similar to the 60 second videos on how to collect and make a profit on coins. I don't care what anyone does with their coins that I sold but this was a preposterous claim and leading on people who would someday find out these were only worth 10 cents each. There is a place for commenting, but like I said, it can be hidden by the poster. Not much we can do but hope someone comes here first and asks. There are some sites online, but I don't know their names, that can and do take questions and then find out the truth. Too much work at this point.

Link or it didn't happen... ;)

No, just kidding, but I would like to see it if willing to share.

I admit I've basically no understanding of how YouTube works, but cannot help but to wonder if some willing soul was to produce their own videos calling out the BS of others by name, would it be taken down?

I'm sorry Books, but after I watched the video I eliminated the email they sent me also. I may be able to find it back on my emails on Listia. I'll see what I can do. It was sent in text w/o a highlighted link so I had to copy and paste to get there.

I've no idea if anything could be done or even if I'd hope such an option exists. As with anything designed for the greater good, there's always someone willing to use it to silence the wrong others.

That said, if you'd really like to help others, perhaps consider sharing your story here. Folks coming here from YouTube at least are showing a desire to seek out info elsewhere, and would be a prime opportunity to try to enlighten them before even more damage is done. I just can't help but to think someone sharing their personal experience would get the point across more than someone who hasn't been impacted by the nonsense simply saying that YouTube is bad.

    It worked, but..... OY!!

I guess I should try to figure out what in the hell a "Listia" is; that 189k thing nearly resulted in heart failure. ;)

Still, thank you very much even if I couldn't help but to find it rather appalling. This also only helps to reaffirm my belief (about six years ago when leaving the hobby) that things would only grow worse before getting better. A few years prior I tried to sell off what was then about twenty years worth of accumulated lower-dollar material, and could barely give it away even to folks who were crying about wanting to make money. Instead of being grateful I got to hear about how they just had to make 400% for it to be worth their precious time, and even then they only wanted to be handed higher dollar material at a tiny fraction of retail and/or me to do all the work so they could simply list and collect money. The greater point is that if this is in any way indicative of what most new folks expect from this hobby, I'm glad to be out.

At the time this sold at 189K credits, a USD per Listia was worth 27,500 credits. Factoring in my shipping costs, bubble mailers and time, this was fair at the time. But Listia recently did away with credits and is now using a crypto currency which is currently destroying this sites credibility. Members are moving out in hoards and going to other venues like Traderkat and Etsey. I'm going to hang in there for awhile and see how it pans out but I fear it is destined for failure. I have already started to make the move to another site. Yes, that video was really bad. Shame on that young lady.

Do you know why they don't use good old fashioned money?

I cannot say I've ever searched Etsy for coins, but every once in a while I will for vintage glass (lenses). Generally speaking, it's overpriced junk, or if decent they're even more ridiculously overpriced. I've never heard of "Traderkat" though...

Yes, all of these sites are overpriced for sure. And most of these sites are pretty lame when it comes to coins also. Way too many kids and adults who know little or nothing about coins. I pretty much stayed with some heavy hitters who I found to be very reliable and reasonable. Crypto currency is too much work for too little return and having to watch what they are trading for at any given moment. Like PM's they change back and forth each day.
