Just bought this Follis , I like the cabinet toning on this one: Show your coins with the Temple of Roma & Venus , thanks
Me too. Like your "X marks the spot" visual aid. Observation about the first picture, though, from "during Roman times". Who knew they had such good color photography? And such modern clothing. Not a toga in sight!
PS- I didn't think I had one, but I took a spin back through my old Roman collection, and lo and behold, look at this Maxentius!
Nice one Andres2, I seen that one as well from memory it was a really good price. Beautiful coin, the type I am in the market for. Until then I will have to make do wth these Temple of Roma and Venus.
That's a lovely follis and no doubt you're proud to have it in your collection. You might like this write-up I once did about this temple, too. Here are my temple of Roma and Venus coins: Maxentius as Augustus, AD 307-312 Roman billon follis; 6.53 g, 24.6 mm, 10 h Rome, AD 307-308 Obv: IMP C MAXENTIVS P F AVG, radiate head right Rev: CONSERV VRB SVAE, Roma seated facing in hexastyle temple, head left, globe in right hand, scepter in left, shield at side behind, Victories as acroteria, wreath on pediment, H left, R S in exergue Refs: RIC 202a; Cohen 21; RCV 14986 Probus, AD 276-282 Roman billon antoninianus; 3.78 g, 20.1 mm, 11 h Rome, AD 277-280 Obv: IMP PROBVS P F AVG, radiate bust right in consular robe, eagle tipped scepter in right hand Rev: ROMAE AETER, temple, statue of Roma seated facing inside; in exergue, R * A Refs: RIC 183; Cohen 533; RCV 12027 var.
Great write up Roman Collector, read it again, thanks. Trajanus famous architect , Apollodonus didn't like the temple, and said the statues of Roma and Venus were to big, Hadrian had him executed Sestertius of the architect and founder , Roma on the reverse:
Nice one with Maximianus, Andres. I don't have one of those yet, only a few in Maxentius's name. Aquileia mint. Rome mint, rotated doublestrike on reverse. A-Pi sestertius.
Constantine I ("the Great"), as Caesar: Rome mint, A.D. 307 RIC 196 Obv: CONSTANTINVS NOB CAES Rev: CONSERVATO-RES VRB SVAE - Roma, in hexastyle temple, with globe, shield and scepter R[star]Q in exergue 27 mm, 5.8 g.
That’s a lovely addition @Andres2. I think people sometimes dismiss the post-reform coinage as being a little dull... but they aren’t all just Genio Populi Romani! This is a terrific example of a interesting reverse.
Great coins all! I'm still looking for a temple type of Maxentius. I lost an auction bid on one a couple of months ago.
