Take a look at this Altered Date washington quarter I picked up today. Must have been a practice piece. Let me here some scenarios. Harrison Stop Motion
Interesting - I can't make up my mind if they struck or cast the coin; or if they just added the 1 after sanding the 0 down. Either would be possible, but if it was the former then they sure went to a lot of work for it. I'm tempted to say they added the 1.
Now that pic makes me think they tried to add the 0 around the 1. Is there a plugged hole on the edge ?
Hard to tell without a tilted view, can't see under it. Wierd tho, and most def , a practise coin I bet
Hey Frank, So your thinking it's an error not an altered coin? If, so laminations are pretty common, correct? Thanks for the help! Harrison
Doug, I understand what you are saying! However, I do not see a "0" under the "1". What I see is a Lamination separation that is peeling up around the "1" but has not separated from the coin...thus it would be raised. Besides, have you ever seen an overdate (man-made or Mint made) where the underlying numeral was nearly twice the size font of overlying numeral? Frank
Doug: Except that in this instance the lamination is still in place, not removed which would cause an indent. It looks like a lamination to me.
Uh, yes. Try 1802/0 half cent or 1820/19 O-101 half dollar. Those come the closest, and when you go to overdates outside the US they can become even more extreme.
