I have a few but at the top of the list is the Ike Dollar that my grand-dad gave me on the day I was born (my first coin, he gave a silver dollar to all of us grand-kids). Another is my avatar - a gold casino token from Campione (an Italian enclave) which my aunt gave me as a small boy. She travelled all over the world as part of her govt. job (I imagined her as being a female James Bond, b/c she was very secretive about her work). She would bring me coins from her travels, as she knew I liked to collect them. When I got older and the Internet was now around, I researched all the foreign coins she had given me as a boy, to figure out where they were from & get an idea of all the neat places my aunt traveled. This one turned out to be an actual gold casino token. Apparently in the 50s & 60s the casino in Campione issued gold casino tokens to be used at the roulette table. Thank God I treated my coins with more care than my GI Joe action figures back then One day I am going to visit that casino (no way I'm spending my token though!) :kewl:
As I get older I see how coins are really just a "bonus" in life. Don't get me wrong, I love collecting coins and I spend a large part of each day researching and studing coins. I have a few different coins that mean alot to me....ones that have been given to me, and others that I had to save up to buy, but coins can be replaced....some other things can't. Speedy
I believe it is St. Patrick (due to the fistful of snakes - legend has it he drove out all the snakes from Ireland; no idea why he would be on an Italian casino token though).
Probably my proof George Washington half dollar anniversary commemorative. I thought it was rare for a while but getting back into it and having the internet available, I see them all over. My dad bought it for me when I collected as a kid, at a show at the mall that we went to. He wasn't into coins but I was and he got it for me. I'll never sell it. Same with all the silver dollars and Kennedy halves that were my grandfather's that I recently obtained. I never liked Kennedy halves but I suddenly had so many, I decided to put together a whole set using the nicest ones out of the group. Almost filled a 64-85 folder with them. Plugging the other holes this week. Now I'm into collecting all half dollars and hope to finish all sets at least back to the seated liberty halves.
Easy one for me. When I was a kid my Dad brought me all those new shinny, Silvery looking pennies that just came out. He would try to find as many as possible and all were like new, naturally since they were new. That started me on coin collecting and I haven't stopped since those 1943 cents came out. I ended up with about 30 rolls of them and still have them all.
1891-CC Morgan given to me from my Grandmother after my Grandfather passed away. Once I held that coin, I was hooked..................
Mine's a toss-up... Either my 1916-D Mercury Dime... which was the coin that finished my first (and only, so far) complete set... OR... my 1986 Silver Eagle that my Brother gave me back in 1986 (I was 8 yrs old.) Edit... I take it back about the complete set. I do have all the UNC Silver Eagles in a Dansco book, except for the 2018.
Glad you resurrected this thread. It will be interesting to read our members stories. Mine is a 1878 8TF Morgan. This coin really got me hooked on collecting. It has a toning pattern that I love and it's also the first Morgan I paid premium on. 1878 8TF MS64 by jpcienkus posted Feb 7, 2018 at 8:31 PM
I wish I had a pic of my (2) favorite coins here with me but I will find them and post probably by tomorrow. My first was a Peace Dollar my father collected in a unique type holder. I can't remember the name but I am sure others will be able to identify it. I never knew he collected coins and I found it out that it was only piece he ever collected. The (2) is my son's first silver coin he ever found. When my son was 9 or 10 years old and on Saturday mornings both my son and I would go and wash the car and he enjoyed taking the $5 I gave him to get some quarters for us to wash the car. On this particular Saturday he came back from the coin machine and asked me why this quarter looked different than the others. He had found a 1960 Silver Quarter and he was so excited that he was jumping up for joy. I put it into a 2X2 and he placed it with pride on this desk. Well over the years despite raising him the best as I could as a single parent he decided to take the not so straight path in life and started to deceive and manipulate people to get what he wants. The day he left the house, he took his things and basically destroyed his room. It looked like a grenade went off in his room. As I went in to clean up the mess I found his silver quarter in the corner underneath a ton of junk. A tear came to the corner of my eye and I took that quarter and but into my personal collection. I often look at it and remember the good times my son and I had. We don't talk at all anymore (and not because of me not trying) and I really do regret this. One day when my time is over I will leave if for him with a small note telling him I always loved him and was always proud of him. I miss my son. Such is life.
A 1912 D Liberty Head ("V") Nickel. My mother wore it in her shoe on November 19, 1930, when she and my dad got married. I told her I would never get rid of it, and I won't. I am deciding who to pass it on to, but I WON'T get rid of it!
Would be the well worn 1959 Franklin half my mom handed me to buy school lunch with in the late 1960’s. I went hungry that day and began this passion for coins I have had ever since.
Nice thread. I suppose I would have to say it is my LHC collection in Whitman Folders 1 & 2 begun when I was in the 10th grade in 1959.
