Beautiful and the coin is great as well. I know times have changed, but one of my favorite JC coins was purchased years ago on Ebay for approximately $100 (I didn't keep very good records then). JULIUS CAESAR AR Denarius OBVERSE: Diademed head of Venus right. REVERSE: CAESAR - Aeneas advancing left, carrying Anchises and palladium Carthage 47 to 46 BC 4.0g, 17mm CRI 55, Sydenham 1013, RRC 458/1, S 1402
Speaking of eBay bargains, I'm hoping this one will pay off. These pictures aren't great but the coin underneath looks excellent. Right around $150 hammer. Should know later this week.
I see! I'm not used to seeing the Dioscuri so well struck! I think that's a great price for this coin!
Thanks SA! Cost me around a quarter to a fifth of what these usually ask for, and XLII nor any reference to the Ostrogoths was not mentioned in the listing, so the seller seemed in the dark about it. Funny enough on the back of the paper insert someone had written XLII, but nothing else (besides "Domitian" and "As" on the front).
This one turned out even better than expected and has some beautiful old collection toning to boot. eBay delivers again: Roman Republic AR Denarius(4.04g, 18mm). M·IVNI(Marcus Junius Silanus?) series, 145 B.C., Rome mint. Helmeted head of Roma right; behind, ass's head; before, X. Border of dots / Dioscuri galloping right; below, M·IVNI; in exergue, ROMA. Crawford 220/1 Reportedly ex an American collection formed over 70 years ago
For true bottom-feeding, I find eBay unbeatable. The luck factor is high (good and bad), and I do get burned sometimes, but with a limited budget, I just find eBay irresistible. Here are four I got recently, with prices. Aurelian Ant., ORIENS reverse, much silvering intact: $3.25 Postumus Ant. PAX reverse, pretty good metal: $22.00 "Buy it Now" Byzantine Half Follis, Justin II (Thessalonica) and Constans II (Carthage): $7.99 for the pair. To be sure, nothing pristine here: some encrustation on the Aurelian, weak legend on the Postumus, a hint of what might be BD on the Justin II. So these are not for the high-end collector. But even so, a fixed-price dealer would probably sell these for substantially more than I paid. None of them are, as far as I can tell, fake (but again, I do get burnt from time to time). Shipping not included in the above - all were USA sellers, so about $3-4 for each shipment (the Postumus was free shipping). And a lot of time spent wading through fakes and nonsensically over-priced stuff.
"For true bottom-feeding, I find eBay unbeatable." For coins $10 and under eBay can't be beat. I sell a lot of low-grade (or what I prefer to call "entry level") coins on eBay--3rd century ants and common LRBs in fair to aVF grade--and prices have actually dropped for these coins over the past 10 years or so. Coins that used to bring $12.00 ten years ago now fetch between $5-7. Coins that used to sell for $5.00 now go unsold, even with $.99 opening bids. So, yeah, if you're looking for place holders or just starting out, definitely check out eBay.
I am pretty new so I only know a few reliable sellers.. and only a couple that ship for a reasonable price. If anyone has any recommendations on that please send me a PM. I would appreciate it more than you would ever know. Cheers!
This one was fun. Found this Quinarius as originally a Crawford 44/6. Price was right at $40 Fully Loaded Cost. Bought this several years ago, and just put it away in my Albums. Posted it back in 2017. Cool. Then the @red_spork Man corrected me: RR Anon AR Quinarius 211-208 BC Roma Dioscuri Craw 44/6 REATTRIBUTED: 212-195BC. 1.8g. Luceria mint. Anonymous. Crawford 098/B1 L. Obverse: hd Roma r with Attic helmet. Although lacking a mintmark note distinctive toothed visor as per Crawford 098-B1 Luceria issue.. Reverse: Dioscuri r, ROMA (ummm... Very Rare) Thanks Sporky for mending my errant ways!
You know, I wouldn't mind knowing who the better sellers are on Ebay. I tend to get into and out of the hobby as funds and spare time changes, but awhile back I wanted a nice 1798 Large Cent, and I spent months looking on Ebay before getting a satisfactory one, Everyone and his dog were selling overpriced culls, and I could not afford the thousands for a high end one. Not to mention the high percentage of frauds. Basically, an honest dealer or two would be great. I would rather post here to brag about my new coins than to become just one more sad ripoff story.
I find by far the best is this one https://www.ebay.com.au/usr/numismatiklanz?_trksid=p2047675.l2559 he has world coins as well and cheap shipping (signed for), but it is like any auction or fixed buy you must have a good knowledge of what price the coins are worth before you bid. This seller might suit you to
Caveat Emptor. If you search this site for discussions of Lanz you will find many allegations that his eBay sales include tooled coins. I can't say one way or the other because honestly I simply don't look at his listings or have any desire to do business with his firm after reading the comment he made on a thread about a tooled aureus on the Coin Forgery Discussion List: Restauration is not tooling.
