I had the pleasure of visiting the Michael C. Carlos Museum on the campus of Emory University in Atlanta recently, and snapped some photos of the beautiful Greek silvers they had in their collection. I’m sure that some of you will recognize most of them at a glance. All were in beautiful condition, and although you can’t exactly see it in the photos, nearly every single one had beautiful, iridescent toning. While this collection is modest compared to others, I wasn’t expecting to see any coins, so it took me by surprise. I was truly struck by the beauty of some of these Greek coins. It’s well worth a visit if you find yourself in the area. It has a very impressive collection of Classical and Egyptian art, which one might not necessarily expect to find in the Southeastern US. I included a few other highlights below as well; the large bust of Tiberius was quite breathtaking, as were about a hundred other things I could have photographed.
I was wondering if they had a numismatic collection. I guess I will have to pay them a visit sometime in the near future.
