2005 proof Lincoln cent still encased. The top of the letters and the lh side of the Memorial building have die marks that look to have penetrated the outer layer and exposed the zinc. It is only on 1/2 the coin. I've never seen this before on a proof. Any thoughts or am I way off base here? a511.jpg a512.jpg b513.jpg b514.jpg

I've never seen this before. Maybe someone else will chime in.

If this is the silver proof set, be sure to check the KS SQ for the die dent on the buffalo (FS-901) or the lamination defect under LIBERTY.

Yes, split plating in those areas. I would assume it could happen on proofs also.

In the case of my coin, maybe it was a new or newer proof die..... and sharp.

Garlicus Debt is dumb, cash is king.

I've seen "issues" like that on many proof coins. I figure it is, or similar to, machine doubling.

Would that be counted against the coin by a grader? It seems to me that it's at least as objectionable as a hit or spotting, but it did happen during the strike, not after...

When I got the set from the Mint, my first impression of the die dent was that some horse kicked him squarely in the arse and the impression was from the inside out.

No problem! FWIW, you could have clicked on "Edit" and moved your reply from within my quote and put it below. I've done that on occasions, too!
