I've always been fascinated by Russian gold coins.....finally managed to get myself two that I've been after for a while.

I think @Siberian Man will have some input on these :)

My absolute favourite.......Catherine II 'The Great' 1767 gold 10 Roubles

    Nicholas I 1848 gold 5 Roubles

Nice pickups! The Ekaterina II gold is real tough, even examples with issues :)

Agreed!!! They seldom come up for sale. I was looking at some past auction prices and even in VF condition they were consistently over 8k. So I think I did OK for an AU condition with scratches on the obverse :)

The reverse is quite nice so I guess I'll just have to learn to live with the scratches ;)

Very true, prohibitively expensive to collect. Your coin does have good eye appeal though, so congrats on that. My only example of Russian gold of this era is a 1766 2 rubles.

Dude! I was expecting to see Nicholas II, not Catherine the Great! Wow! :greedy:

(I see you did manage to get ol' Nickie in there, too.)

Golden coins of Catherine II the Great wasn't numerous. Usually they were used court for card play. With a high share of probability someone from great Russian courtiers held your coin in hand.

Thanks LM. A compliment from you means a lot. I also managed to pick up two very rare silver roubles recently which I thought were very good buys. Will post them here a little later and hopefully Siberian Man can shed some light on them.

Elizabeth Rouble 1761 СПБ-ЯI AU53 NGC, St. Petersburg mint, KM-C19c.4, Bit-293 (R1), Diakov-557 (R1) Petrov 15 Rub., portrait and eagle by Ivanov. A very rare, and seldom offered issue.

That was the auctioneer’s narrative. The last one sold was an XF for 15k. I think I stole this one :).....an AU53

Thanks Siberian Man. I think the two silver roubles and the Ekaterina II Gold 10 Roubles are ones to keep for many years. Hope you agree.:)
