I've just finished going thru my latest nickel box and have a couple of questions on the 1970-1979 issues or errors. I know that 1975-D is a valid error coin (wandering mint mark). I have seen mention made of a 1971-D error coin. But, I'm not certain because i've have seen posts about error coins in that decade, but 1971-D is not mentioned. Is it a valid error coin? Is there any other reason to collect/store (i.e. hoard) nickels from that decade? I've been setting those aside just because they are old. I've read that collectors are suggesting the 1960-1969 nickels be kept because of their age. These are newbie questions, I know. I am still learning about getting serious in this hobby. I've been collecting coins since the early sixties with my Dad. When he passed, I just started collecting the coins that have blank spaces in my Dad's coin folders and kept adding new ones as they came along. Just from change received in the normal course of events. Thanks, GT
I got rid of my 1940's nickels. Even though they were old, they had no collector value in circulated grades. Then you can use the freed-up cash to buy things that might appreciate.
Wandering mintmark? The mintmark was punched into each working die by hand until 1990, so there will always be some variation in the placement. While there may be a particular error known for 1975-D, it doesn't mean the every coin struck by the Denver Mint in 1975 will have that error because more than one die (or pair of dies) was used to produce all of the nickels for that year. The same would be true for any other year and or mintmark. Chris
As for the 1971-D question, I don't have a specific error, I just read somewhere that there was an error in that nickel. As for the 1975-D wandering mint mark, this error talks about the mint mark being very close to the 5 or to Jeff's shoulder. More than slight misplacement. Assuming the planned placement was to be midway between the shoulder and the 5. Thanks, GT
I wouldn't keep typical heavily worn '70's coins but it might be a good idea to hang onto nice XF and better ones. Some of these dates are much scarcer in Unc than people think and Uncs can be pretty ugly.
I am sure there are errors of every year, mintmark and denomination. With the number of coins being produced, mistakes will happen.
I used to have one where the D was VERY far away from the normal placement. But as mentioned the MM was hand punched into the die and that one was just further away. Never heard of a small D. I doubt it is anything, because then every coin that was struck by that small D die would have it, and it would be a known variety. Also the punch used is the same size MM on every die. Except in certain cases like the 1941-S. And the 1945-S Mercury dime. And some of the old large O mms.
just found a 1971-D jefferson nickel with a rotated die does anyone have a ballpark value the cion is in like mint condition. with full steps
