Should I be "grinian"ing or was this a "Nig"ative idea?

?

Was it a good idea to spend $111 on this coin?

I thought I would steal a page out of the book of one of the funniest CT pals, @lordmarcovan , and post a poll to see if I got the great deal that I think I got.
I won this on eBay (from a seller I have purchased from many times and trust) for what I believe to be the low low rock bottom price of $111 (keeping in mind, that is a months coin budget for myself).
It's a Nigrinian!!! If you've never heard of him keep in mind here is about all we know of him...
He was probably the son of Roman Emperor Carinus and so a Caesar. We think Magna Urbica was his mom. Though that's up for dispute as some say he was Carinus' sister's kid. He died in infancy in late 284 or early 285. After his death he was defied. Hence the Divo on the coin.
    Check it out!

Let me know what you think. And please post your Nigrinians or any coins pertinent to the topic!

I checked Forum's fake reports and although some of the pics are quite small, there was no match. At least I didnt see one. Still I'm skeptical. Further investigation required...:pompous:

Thanks for looking (I had checked there a month or so ago before bidding but not since). So, you feel it is to good to be true? How else can we investigate?

If its a authentic Nigrinian, I'd say its a great deal even if its damaged.

Wow, every time I think I finally know the list of Caesars and Augustii of the 3rd century, including usurpers, another one comes out of the woodworks. If you had told me yesterday there was a coin of a Roman called Nigrinian who was a Caesars in the 3rd Century, I would have screamed fake...but sure enough, here he is....

@Ryro I think it's a nice pick up! :bookworm: I hadn't heard of him. :wideyed: So are you thinking about cleaning it when you get it? Giving it a soak? :cyclops::rolleyes::drowning::drowning::drowning:

Thanks! I just got him today!! (He took a bit of a detour, thanks USPS, once crossing the pond. But I have im now.) And, yes, though the green/possible BD hasn't progressed from the sellers pic to it getting to my excited grubbers (it is flaky and failed the finger nail test), so he is taking a relaxing distilled water bath:drowning:

If I recall correctly, Nigrinian is one of those historical figures we only know because of his coins.

If it's genuine (and I think it is), I'm totally jealous!!! Definitely worth the risk IMO. Well done!!!

Here's a similar Consecratio issue from his (probable) grandpa:

Wow. Ruff shape, but there's a rara avis, fer sure.

These days I collect my ancients (mostly) for aesthetic reasons, and so would run screaming from one that looks like that ... BUT ... there is enough of the old "hey, let's check another Roman emperor off the list" philosophy left in me to be impressed with this coin, despite its issues. It's essentially intact... and identifiable.

And at the price... oh yeah.

Sounds good to me, on a gut-check level, anyway.

Not that I can pretend to know very much here. I'd heard of Nigrinian, and knew he was rare, but that's about where my knowledge ends.

Glad someone enjoys my kooky polls (I think).

PS- FWIW, I amassed over 100 different personalities in my short-lived but passionate "A to Z" (Augustus to Zeno) collection of Roman Imperial coins ... and did it in little more than a year. I started in 2007 as a novice, got that far with it, and in 2008 it all came to a screeching halt when I had to sell them after getting laid off in the Great Recession. But I learned a good bit.

What I'm getting at is... I never had Nigrinian, obviously. Coingrats. That's a tough one off the checklist.
