I can certainly understand that my original suggestion may become unwieldy and have many unintended consequences. It is an idea, a starting point of discussion.. I was just voicing my frustration at the current state of affairs and hoping someone had better or more refined thoughts on this subject. I like your response and I appreciate it. Another response read "Why must there be something done to help new collectors? Is it incumbent on seasoned collectors to hold the hands of new collectors?" I never stated that helping new collectors was necessary to anyone. But I am glad of the positive responses. Have a wonderful Friday.
How about this; http://www.ebay.co.uk/gds/GENUINE-SELLERS-LIST-OF-ANCIENT-COINS-ARTIFACTS-/10000000003542534/g.html
Just out of curiosity, what are everyones thoughts on sellers such as ancient_treasures or Holding History? I'm conflicted with who to buy from with at least some amount of certainty that their products are genuine.. I am also interested in Numismatik Lanz, but I've read a lot of bad feedback about his business practices. Your thoughts?
@ Chris - I did not ask for an alphabetical list to be maintained. My idea was a "pinned" thread at the top of the Ancient discussion board. On this thread members could add a comment mentioning a seller that they use or have had a great experience with. Then if well known members were to "like" a comment it may add additional credibility to a particular post. Perhaps the thread could be locked down so only "paying" long time CoinTalk members could post to it - to avoid spam? The rest could just view? I certainly don't have the full answer to this problem - but there must be something that can be done to help new collectors.
If you will, picture such a thread that has been in existence for 5-10 years with thousands and thousands of various sellers names pinned to it. Who would want to sort through untold thousands to see if a specific seller is listed? It's a bad idea! Chris

Chris
I agree with you on one thing: leaving a pinned thread without management or clean up for 5 or 10 years on any topic would be a bad idea. Thank you for your contribution.
There's plenty of information you can find here at CoinTalk by just searching "Lanz". What other questions do you have?
I am somewhat conflicted on this. I have posted pictures of coins (mainly e-bay) I am thinking about buying, but never to ask anything about price, but to confirm (if possible) authenticity. I don't mention particulars and if I have ever stepped on anyone's toes (unlikely with the stuff I buy), I apologize.
@Clavdivs, I hope you don't think we are being callous in shooting down your idea. It's wonderful to see a new collector who is so enthusiastic and who wants to learn, to help others, and to improve the forum .
I've always liked Joe's saying over at Forum "Either know the coin or know the dealer" and I'll add to that "If you know both even better!"
All three are reputable sellers. Lanz has a reputation for tooling their bronze pieces, although I've never had any issues with their silver.
Personally, I have seen so many egregiously tooled bronzes listed on Lanz's site that I would never purchase an ancient bronze from them. It's irrelevant to me whether or not Lanz is somehow complicit in the tooling, or simply chooses to list the coins without noting the tooling, or just doesn't care. If you ever consider purchasing a bronze from Lanz, you would do well to consult with other collectors who are knowledgeable about that coin prior to making a purchase commitment.
Huh, that's interesting. I'm shocked that he has such high ratings. So you guys think buying his denarii is fine though?
No I really appreciate the feedback, suggestions and the discussion. I also received a couple of PMs with great information. Thank you!
100% positive feedback on ebay means nothing when it comes to ancients. Some of the worst sellers have that. I like MORTOWN on ebay, I have bought 20 coins from him with no issues. I think he posts here as well. John
