Going through a drawer I discovered a silver colored penny with a date of 194. There is not even a hint of a last number. I'm not sure if it could have possibly wore off, it dose'nt appear as such. Does anyone know if there were any such pennies minted with this error? Thanks

Howdy jeffrejames - Welcome to the Forum !!

There are a couple of different possibilities - your coin could be an unplated planchet that was struck with a grease filled die. It could also be an ordinary cent that was struck with a grease filled die and then treated with acid the remove the copper cladding so that it could be sold to an unsuspecting error collector. Can you post a pic ?

Maybe it is a damaged steel cent. They look silvery when they are new. If there is anyway I can assist you Jeff just let me know and I will be glad to help as I consider myself to be an expert of sorts with years of experience.

NOS you are probably right. My reply shows what happens when I type before my morning coffee. For even with a partial date of 194 - the cent rather obviously would not have copper cladding. So it probably is as you say a 1943 steel cent - struck with agrease filled die.

Thanks for your replies. I had my wife look at it and she can see a very faint 3 when directed at an angle in the light. So much for my error coin
    Thanks again

As both NOS and GDJMSP said its always tough to say without a picture, but I'd say its still an error coin, though relatively common as errors go. At any rate, I share this.....

It was a year 200 Roosevelt dime that got me into collecting/error hunting, so in some regards, you may have quite a find there ;)

May just be very weakly struck or maybe it got dinged at one time by someone intentionally.

Hey, it's 2018 and actually have the exact same penny!!!.. I think there might be some sort of error going on if we both have the same thing..right?.. I have a 194 wheat penny as well... Although it's in pretty bad condition. Well not bent or mangled in any way just weathered and corroded a little.. but there's no sign of anything after the 4.. also it's not steel, cause well it's not magnetic.. so it's copper/bronze.. could it be a magical 194---3 copper penny except with an error?? I say yes and you and I are he only ones to have one.. bidding starts at.....1 MILLION DOLLARS...Muah haha muahhaahaa!!

I have 194 pennies. Does that count for anything?

If it was the exact same, then it would be 1943 and a steel cent.
