I remember my first find. It was a 1964 dime. At the time I didn't know anything about coins (except that wheat pennies were pretty cool) so I simply kept any nickel/dime/quarter from the 60s or earlier. Then one day I read an article that said anything from 1964 and earlier was silver and I started searching all my change until I found 1 silver dime. Starting that day, (10/10/15) I became a coin collector.
So since we're super cheap, we give a handful of change as tip for the baggers at the grocery store. One time when I was 9 mom gives me a handful of coins, and I see one that looks a little weird. It was dated 1945, which was pretty old so I kept it. Later I found out it was silver! And that was my first - and to date only - war nickel ever found in change
1911 v nickel I found in change... At first I thought it was foreign, but I took a closer look later and to my amazement it was American, I did some research to find out more about it, that was about 3 yrs ago and have found coins fascinating ever since
Not sure anymore which was my first find. I was sent to the post office with 6 cents to mail a letter and the nickel was a 1938S so back home I pedaled for a different nickel. I also remember finding a 1932D penny in a roll which my father promptly traded me out of for an Indian cent. My father created a coin monster
Don't know what my first "find" was BUT I remember the first coin that caught my attention. I had started a paper route at Ft. Ord, CA, in 1955 and had just become "aware" of dates on coins. The one I remember getting was a 1909 LWC. By the time we moved in 1956 I had found two 1909 and two 1909 VDB cents. But no "S" Mint versions (rats).
I was digging (several decades ago now) where we were going to put a fence. I had one of those small garden shovels. Then I dug up the 1925 10cent mercury dime which is my avatar.
I rember when I was in the second grade I found a wheat back penny in my change =) Hey, we have the same name! Welcome to the forum!
Found in a park in 1963. This is what an XF type 1 Standing Liberty quarter looks like after 50+ years as a pocket piece.
That was so long ago, I just don't remember. But I do remember getting silver dollars and taking them to the bank to add to my savings account.
I can't be sure of the exact date, but it was in the summer of 1957. I had just won $5 at the local poolroom, and was paid with four ones and a silver dollar. I had never seen one before, so I went to the bank and asked a teller if she had any more. She spread out a bunch of them, and I spotted an 1893. I took it because it was the year my grandmother was born. Later on, I learned at the library that it was an 1893CC. Chris
I was a little kid when my father returned from his last tour of duty over in SE Asia - he left a Vietnamese 10 dong coin laying around in the house and I found it and that started the bug. I asked him about it and where it came from etc., which resulted in a Seagrams bag full of Japanese, Australian, Singaporean, and Vietnamese and a few Thai coins.
I found a 1945 PDS sent of wheat cents in a bag of cents in our basement. That hooked me. I sold them for 3¢ each some years ago. I wish I still had them...
I remember the first time my heartbeat speeded up on finding a coin. Probably 8 years old (1953) and going through a cash register at a restaurant when I came up with a 1916 Merc, flipped it over and saw a letter...pound, pound, pound...of course it was an "s".
I was in high school, counting money we collected from donations and I found an Indian Head Cent. It was my first big find. I kept it but sadly no longer have it as on one of my moves, part of my collection was stolen. Nothing of any real numeric value, just intrinsic.
Mine was a '17 Wheat that I got in change from an Arby's in '68. I was 9 y/o, and don't know what intrigued me about it - I think I had recently gotten interested in old coins, but I was hooked from then on. Next day at school, my trophy got trumped by Steve Boothe, whose dad had just brought him a brand new '68 S Lincoln from a trip out West (we were in Balt. MD). Steve was always trumpin' my trophies. I got a Whitman Tri-Fold; HE got the Whitman ALBUM. I got a Baltimore Clippers Hockey puck (had to trade a bunch of Orioles' BB Cards for it too), Steve got a ball autographed by Clay Dalrymple. We were best buddies, but dang he was always one-uppin' me... (on the cents; I won't say which of the 2 of us said, "Wanna' trade?", but he's NOT gettin' ready to click on 'Post Reply' (another hint; there was no trade, 'cause one of me said "nope"). )
Was a Franklin half. My mom handed it to me to buy lunch with at school. I went hungry that day and still have the half.......... I started paying attention to coins after that. Remember the ads in old comic books? "You may have a dime in your pocket with $100.00 bucks!!"..... Oh yeah. I was sucked in 110% percent.
I'm sure my first find was a wheat cent as I started out roll searching in the early 70's. I do remember my first notable find, a 1926-S in EF condition.
