Had a few moments to start going through some recent non-silver purchases. Here are some highlights: Belgium - 1902 5 Centimes China (Republic) - 1938 (Year 27) 10 Cents (1 Chiao) France - 1915 25 Centimes Great Britain - 1910 1/2 Penny India (British) - 1862 1/4 Anna (Note: I'm not sure which mint and variety this coin is - if anyone knows, I'd appreciate the attribution help.) Italy - 1958 20 Lire Lebanon - 1961 25 Piastres Mexico - 1897 Mo 1 Centavo Morocco - 1952 50 Francs (Note: this coin is absolutely proof like in hand. I actually tried to figure out if they'd made a proof version of this coin - looks like they only made the proof for the 20 Francs in AH 1366. Either way, it's a gorgeous coin.) Portugal - 1924 1 Escudo (Note: there is a very interesting split planchet error on the obverse - that's the dark line)
Your Victoria 1/4 Anna is the type A bust (flower on lower panel of dress) Type 1 reverse (two leaves below date) Great coin! I love Victoria pieces... Especially the colonial issues with the young head with braided earmuffs!
From what I see in the Krause, all of them are the same diameter (25.18mm, 6.14g) regardless of mint. There are notes about a V either incuse or raised, but I can't see a V anywhere on the bust (entirely possible I'm not looking in the right place.)
According to Numista (just checked it) under the date a small dot/diamond is Mumbai, pearl is Madras, and nothing is Calcutta. Looks like I got me some nothing from Calcutta? (posted before I saw your last reply, Paddy) Looks like I got me some nothing from Madras? Side note: doesn't seem to make a difference price-wise anyway.
I see it now. I'll roll with that. "Coin, BE ATTRIBUTED" And it was so. And the people did feast upon sloths, and lambs, and anchovies, and orangutans, and breakfast cereals...
The 1888 Mombasa 1 pice bears a mint mark of CM for Calcutta Mint. The 1913 rupee has a dot below the flower on the reverse, for Bombay mint.
Picked up some Italian silver (@ melt), 1965 & 1966 500L The 65 has some neat toning, and the 66 appears to be uncirculated. I don't have many coins from Italy, I may need to get some more.
