Here is a tetradrachm I never thought I would own, but it was listed at a good price and didn't take too long to think it over before I decided to get it. Nero (54 - 68 A.D.) Seleucis & Pieria, Antioch AR Tetradrachm O: NERO CLAVD DIVI CLAVD F CAESAR AVG GER, laureate head of Nero right; star behind. R: [DIVOS] CLAVD AVG GERMANIC PATER AVG, laureate head of Claudius right. Syrian Mint - 63-68 AD 14.11g 26mm Prieur 48; RPC I 4123; BMC 172; Sydenham 65 (Caesarea); RSC 2; McAlee 270.
Good portraits and, while the legends could be more full, the letters present are the ones you might wish to be there. Congratulations on a good find.
Awesome Matt, such a fantastic find! This one was on my list for a while, got it a few weeks ago, super thrilled
Great pickup, Mat! I like how Claudius has a bit of Nero's surly profile I don't have any Antioch tets of Nero, but here are some Alexandrian Nero tets: EGYPT, Alexandria. Hauling this one up from a few pages back, seeing as I now have a specimen of my own: Nero, Antioch or Seleucia Pieria, 54-68AD: O: laureate head right, star behind head, [NER]O CLAVD DIVI CLAVD [F CAESAR AVG GER] / R: laureate head of the divine Claudius right, [D]IVOS CLAVD AVG GERMAN[IC PATER AVG] Some very fine portrait work, I think (to which my photo does no justice whatsoever). Does anybody have any idea what the background to these coins is? I understand the only provincial mints to depict Claudius during the reign of Nero were Antioch, the uncertain mint nearby which people seem to take as Seleucia Pieria, and Caesarea Cappadocia. Were these coins struck in memory of some now-forgotten Claudian liberalitas bestowed on these cities? I note the emphasis on Claudius in the obverse legend as well: Nero Claudius Caesar, son of the divine Claudius.
