Just in!..Phillip l, the Arab Annon reverse, standing hold ear of corn (grain) and cornucopia , galley at feet. 244-249 CE silver antoninanus Rome mint 3.67 grams POST YOUR COINS N COMMENTS PEEPS
Nice coin! Rather than a galley, I think it could be a modius, which is a container for grain. If is it a galley, very cool! Philip I AR Antoninianus. IMP M IVL PHILIPPVS AVG, radiate, draped and cuirassed bust right / ANNONA AVGG. Annona standing left holding corn-ears over modius & cornucopiae. RIC 28c, RSC 25.
Huh, I was going to chime in and say that's a modius at the feet of Annona but apparently on some of Philip's coins, that thing is the prow of a galley! Interesting detail Maybe the galley had just returned from the breadbasket of the ancient Western world, Egypt.
Something a little different . . . Provincial Bronze (AE29) Moesia Superior, Viminacium, A.D. 247-248 Obv: IMP M IVL PHILIPPVS AVG Rev: P M S C-OL VIM - Moesia standing between bull and lion ANVIIII in exergue Varbonov 138 29mm, 14.3g.
Wonderful coins and comments friends.. i was having some vowel troubles early this morning in ID ing the denomination and sex of deity.....but i did find a reference while trying to find Annon"i"a, for a male deity of plenty of Annon, true story(raised right hand)
Gee, hard for me to say if it's a modius or prow... I keep flip-flopping between the two. I think the one on my Severus Alexander may be an Elder Thing.
the seller made no mention either way of the reverse other than it was Anonna, i just punched in Phillip l Annona reverse and *poof*.. this type came up on a few different sites.. and i have a modius type Hadrian reverse..so and but..
Nowadays in Egypt they grow sugar cane in Upper Egypt and a variety of crops in the delta, including cotton. Interestingly, they import most of their grain from the U.S. The bad thing about sugar cane is that they have ovens all over the place to cook down the cane, largely made of blocks scavenged from ancient monuments.
COOL Philip I @ominus1 ! No, not a Modus, no not a Galley... c'mon, does it LOOK like a GALLEY? I think it looks like a COMMODE at her feet... dropping the paper and ready to flush... Here is my only Phil Collins I: The reverse is actually the Rare Horned Jackalope with elongated legs! RI Philip I 244-249 CE AR Ant radiate zoo Antelope 1000 yr anniv Rome
Neat coin. looks like a scmitar horned oryx.. Here is my modern 1976 version Sudan (Conservation Series 1974-79)
