I am trying to determine the date of what I think is a 1926-s Buffalo Nickel. It is hard to tell if the last digit of the date is a 6 or 8. Thanks for any comments.
Actually, besides it looking cleaned to me, I think some of the “wear” might just be a weak strike. Buffalo Nickels from the teens and twenties with mintmark are notorious for terrible strike quality. There are many dealers who still think that Buffalo Nickels need a full date to grade G and a full horn to grade VF, while on certain dates you can find UNCs without either of those. Can’t always go off ANA grading standards. I grade this one F details, cleaned. I say so because it looks unnaturally shiny to me and lots of grime is collected around the design. However, I’ll need better pics to tell for sure. Sorry if I’m a bit late to the party.
It is a 6. If it were an 8, it would have a notch in the middle of the left side between the upper and lower loops.
