About 3 months ago I went on a mission with coin rolls. Very frustrating after I received more than half of my coin rolls as 2017 pennies. The bank loved me (not) when I showed up with so many rolls of pennies to give. But I must say that I’m either lucky or just dang good because I found two of the three pennies I was searching for. First being a 1963-D DDO 3/3 awesome catch and then this which is my 1970S large date. I heard this one was not very common and also seen it auctioned at almost $25k so I was on a mission for sure after seeing that. What’s the deal with it why is it auctioned so high?
Well from the pic you provided I just don't see a $25,000 coin but who knows let other way in. IMO Dave
Where? youtube? That must be wrong. Any rare small or large date is not worth even less than a quarter of that amount
I may be wrong but I think the large date is the most common one. I think there is a doubled die large date that is valuable but yours is not a doubled die.
I'm not sure where you are getting your information, but wherever it is, you should stop using that resource immediately. As others have said, the 1970-S Large date is the common type. Although yours is a nice example, it's still in circulated condition and only worth face value. Heritage Auctions has recently sold 70S small date MS64-65RD examples in the $50-60 range. Not quite $25,000
Even if this didn't come from YouTube, it was worth mentioning it. It's incredible that another site was able to achieve eBay-level damage to this hobby. Truth be told, I'm almost grateful to silversearcher for opening my eyes to the danger YouTube really is.
Wow, ok I literally just felt kinda excited over this post. I had no idea it would bring me these comments. Just to clear the air “It was “NOT” Youtube. It seemed legit but I’ll let you judge by my screenshots. I’m just a female new into this coin hunting game and saw what I saw. I don’t know what’s true and what’s not. I just know I get excited when I see info for something I have. I’m going to post the screenshots of the info I saw. That’s why I joined coin talk so I can learn and keep it movin. I had no idea what I saw was fake or anyway at all untrue since as you will see in the screenshot it was PCGS.com. I already knew about the MS factor. But how am I to assume PCGS.com is inaccurate.
OK, it took some looking but I found the coin that information pertains too. That price was for a doubled die obverse coin in very high grade, this is not the regular large date. I can see where there could be some confusion, the way it is listed it is not really clear. I hope you are not put off by this and keep your interest in coins. The chances of finding something this valuable coin hunting are exceedingly small. Best bet is to study coins, learn about errors, die varieties, condition and rarity. Then you will know when you find something. Keep looking and hang around, you really can learn a lot here!
Thank you very much for your reply!!!! I am learning a lot and I hope to keep learning. It’s just when you start new things and the excitement comes when you think you did something right but then learn that there is another way to get to the core t answer not the right one but the correct one. Thank you
